Q: What do I need to do first if I am interested in mentoring?
A: You will have to fill out a background check/volunteer application. Click on the Richland Two icon above, scroll down the page about half way, and complete the application.
Q: May I have any say in who I mentor?
A: Yes, you may let us know whether you want to work with a
boy or girl and/or if you would prefer a certain grade level.
Q: Once I begin mentoring, may I continue working with the
same student each year?
A: Yes, as long as you want to continue the mentoring relationship, you may.
Q: When do we mentor?
A: The child's teacher works with each mentor in order to find a time that suits
everyone.
Q: What kinds of things do mentors do while they are with their child?
A: You can read to or with your child, spend time talking with them, work on basic math
skills (counting money, telling time, math facts, etc.). We can help you with this
when you come to school the first time. The main thing is just to be here which
shows that you care!
Q: Should I bring gifts to the student I am mentoring on special occasions?
A: We do not want our mentors to feel as if they should bring gifts. If you want to do
something for your child, one good solution is to allow him/her to select a book from
the book fair (we have one in the fall and one in the spring).
