Out-of-school factors

Unfortunately, schools alone are not enough to erase inequalities or to prevent individuals from committing crimes.

There are many other out-of-school factors that increase their likelihood of incarceration, such as:

• Exposure to poverty

• Being in the foster care system

• Having prior exposure to the criminal justice system: having a parent incarcerated or having experience in juvenile detention.

Education must be followed by the appropriate social services to ease the inequalities students face even before they step into the classroom.

In order to address educational gaps, it is essential to implement more assertive measures that focus on the entire life of the student, not only the time they spend in school. These measures should specifically ensure efficient social welfare systems that balance out the inequalities students face even before they step into the classroom.
