ZIBOPHELELE: Ndiyazibophelela ngokunikezela ngexesha lam nemizamo yam yonke ukuqgiba oko ndikuqalayo. Ndizinikezele kwiminqweno yam kwaye ndithembekile nakwabanye. Ngokumela oko ndikuthethayo, ndikhanyisa isibane sam ngokuziqenya ukwenzela sibonwe lilizwe.
COMMIT: I commit my time and best effort to finish what I start. I am dedicated to my goals and loyal to others. By staying true to my word, I proudly shine my light for the world to see.
TOEWY: Ek wy my tyd en my beste poging daaraan om te voltooi waarmee ek begin. Ek is toegewyd aan my doelwitte en lojaal teenoor ander. Deur by my woord te bly, laat ek met trots my lig skyn sodat die wêreld dit kan sien.
Demonstrating commitment is essential for everyone. It is revealed in what we do when no one is watching. It begins with the power of acknowledging every individual, irrespective of who they are, and shows commitment to the whole. Commitment in community requires that every person sees themselves and acts as a bridge builder. This means protecting trust in someone's absence by refusing to participate in gossip and actively protecting people's reputations when they are not in the room to defend themselves. We also demonstrate our commitment through embracing our shared heritage, being genuinely invested in diversity by learning about other cultures and learning other languages, even if only to enjoy basic conversation.
So what do our Rustybugs need from us to establish a mindset and practice of commitment? They need us to lead through authentic execution because they are constantly watching to see whether our actions match our words. We need to see things through from beginning to end, especially when challenges arise or the novelty wears off. They need to see us actively restoring relationships when disagreements or differing perspectives arise. They need to see us normalising the discipline of routine daily habits. This shows them that small, intentional acts performed consistently can lead to achievement of goals. They need to see us fostering pride in shared legacy, especially as stewards of diversity.
Let's all play our part in being a committed school community! Heritage Month is a profound reminder of commitment in action. Let's celebrate who we are individually and collectively, and stay committed to being a school that reflects South Africa.
Well done to all our RGJS staff and learners who have displayed exceptional commitment and growth throughout this shorter, busy term! May you enjoy a restful break and return refreshed for the fourth term.

CELEBRATING A LEGACY:
Farewell to Pam Heiberg at Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School
After more than two decades of dedicated service to Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School, we say farewell to a truly special member of the Rustenburg family: Pam Heiberg.
In this special farewell podcast, we celebrate Pam’s remarkable journey, her contribution to the school community, and the countless relationships she has built along the way.
Pam’s story is deeply woven into the fabric of Rustenburg. Having experienced eight different schools throughout her schooling journey before finding her home at Rustenburg Girls’, she became far more than a colleague; she became part of the heart of the school.
For more than two decades, Pam has helped shape how Rustenburg connects, communicates and celebrates its community. Her warmth, commitment, professionalism and unmistakable personality have left a lasting impression on staff, parents, learners and the wider Rustenburg community.
As she begins her next chapter, we take a moment to reflect on the memories, the laughter, the milestones and the people who have made her journey so meaningful.
Thank you, Pam, for more than 20 years of service, dedication and love for Rustenburg.
Your legacy will continue to live on in the many lives you have touched.
From all of us at Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School:
Thank you. We will miss you. And once a Rustenburg girl, always a Rustenburg girl.

This week, the Music Department hosted our termly Music Assemblies, giving our learners the opportunity to perform for their peers and share the music they have been working on.
Our I/SP Music Assembly on Monday, 14 September featured violin, cello, flute and voice solos, as well as performances by the Wind Band and Brass Ensemble. A particular highlight was the Brass Ensemble, which only began this term and has already taken to the stage. It was incredible to hear a whole ensemble perform together after such a short time, and the girls gave an excellent performance!
Our FP Music Assembly on Tuesday, 15 September showcased piano and toot solos, piano duets and cello groups. It was wonderful to see our younger learners confidently sharing their music and to celebrate the variety of musical opportunities available across the Foundation Phase.
Well done to all our performers on an excellent week of music!
On Friday, 11 September 2026, our Grade 7 girls transformed the school into a bustling marketplace for Entrepreneurs’ Day. The day also coincided with our Literacy Week Book Character Dress-Up Day, with the whole school dressed as their favourite book characters!
The atmosphere was electric, with excitement and positive energy throughout the school. Learners from Grade R to Grade 6 and staff eagerly explored the many creative stalls, featuring delicious treats, fun activities and an impressive selection of handcrafted items made by our Grade 7 entrepreneurs.
It was wonderful to see our school community supporting the Grade 7s as they put their creativity, planning, teamwork and entrepreneurial skills into practice. A truly memorable day filled with learning, laughter and plenty of fun!
Mr Ryklieff
Three days, two nights, one spectacular waterfall, 8.9 km of paddling, glamping tents, questionable steering and a bus playlist capable of producing both hype AND tears — **Grade 7 Camp 2026 had it all!**
The adventure began before we even reached Waterval, Tulbagh. With the girls’ singing repertoire limited to the school song, national anthem and a firm favourite… *“The Wheels on the Bus”*… DJ Petersen took control of the playlist on Bus 1. Requests arrived thick and fast on tiny orange Post-its, hyping up the happy “soon-2-B” campers, who sang their hearts out en route to camp.
At Waterval, the girls spent two glorious days surrounded by breathtaking countryside. Morning manoeuvres saw latecomers sprinting through sunlit fields, while the days brought plenty of adventure. The girls hiked to the spectacular waterfall, splashed in the pools at the top and were kept entertained, challenged and very well-fed by Blessing, Eddy and their wonderful crews. Team-building activities tested new skills, friendships and possibly a little patience, while the glamping tents provided the perfect home away from home.
Then came the entertainment! **RGJS GRADE 7s HAVE TALENT** brought singing, duologues and hilarious skits — including an unforgettable **green lumo-skinned creature**. “Where They Think They Will Be in the World in 2032” proved that these girls certainly have BIG plans for their futures — that is, if the roommates who missed the “brief” and became *inmates*, are released in time!
Day three took us to Worcester and an **8.9 km paddle down the Breede River**. Head-on winds made the flat stretches “interesting”, but once the current arrived, some suddenly became Olympic-level paddlers — with remarkably little paddling involved!
Several girls passed their CROC “learner’s licences” with flying colours. Others discovered that LEFT and RIGHT become surprisingly difficult concepts when a river forks and chose instead the path less paddled — ending up “stranded” on an *island in the stream*.
After ‘wolfing down’ lunch on the riverbank past Onder Brandvlei came a few “flecks” of white water, accompanied by enough screaming to alert most of Worcester and Villiersdorp! Eventually, everyone made it downstream to **Moord Kuil**, our take-out point — although some girls may forever owe Mrs Petersen and their guides for certain towing services!
One final stop allowed everyone to finally spend whatever money they had before our battle with rush-hour traffic began.
This was when our DJ’s skills once again came to the fore, somehow achieving the impossible: sending almost the entire bus to sleep. Peace reigned… briefly.
An enthusiastic and decidedly off-key rendition of *“Sweet Caroline”* from the back seats soon woke most of the sleepers. **BA BA BAAA!** Requests flooded in, and the mood took an unexpectedly emotional turn. By the time Bruno Mars’ *“Count on Me”* played, we had gone from karaoke to full-scale tear-jerker.
Who knew Bus 1 had so many feelings?
Tired? **Absolutely.**
Hoarse? **Probably.**
Proud? **Incredibly.**
Finally, after three unforgettable days, it was back into the waiting arms of parents — with muddy shoes, tired bodies, questionable singing voices and enough memories to last well beyond Grade 7.
**Waterval 2026: we paddled, we laughed, we screamed, we sang… and somehow, we all made it home!**

Our Grade 1 girls had the most wonderful outing to Kirstenbosch Gardens! It was a day filled with adventure, laughter and plenty of springtime fun.
The girls enjoyed a scavenger hunt, exploring the gardens and looking carefully for all the things on their lists. They loved having a picnic on the grass, followed by lots of rolling down the hills and giggling together!
A highlight of the day was walking along the Tree Canopy Walkway, where the girls enjoyed seeing the gardens from a different perspective. They also loved spotting the beautiful spring flowers in bloom and taking in the sights and sounds of nature.
It was such a special day for our Grade 1 girls, creating happy memories together outside the classroom.
From Monday, 7 September to Friday, 11 September 2026, RGJS celebrated Literacy Week, a wonderful week dedicated to all things literacy!
The programme included Lus vir Lees for both the Foundation Phase and ISP, a special Bug Buddy Connect, and plenty of opportunities to celebrate the joy of reading.
The week ended on a high with our Book Character Dress-Up Day, where the whole school had great fun dressing up as their favourite book characters and bringing the magic of stories to life!

The Bug Buddy families had a fantastic time during Literacy Week, connecting and having fun in their House Venues!
They learned how to greet one another in a variety of languages and took on the challenge of naming South Africa’s 12 official languages.
But who came out on top? The winning House will be announced in assembly, so watch this space!

MUSIC
On Monday, 7 September, we held a Lunchtime Concert in the playground, with a wonderful turnout of girls coming along to listen and support their peers.
Our Lunchtime Concerts provide a lovely opportunity for girls to perform in an internal, low-pressure and peer-focused environment. The relaxed setting allows them to share their music with their friends and classmates, making it a positive and enjoyable performance experience.
We had a wonderful variety of performances, including solos, duets and trios. It was lovely to see so many girls taking the opportunity to perform and to see their peers showing such enthusiastic support.
SPORT
As the season comes to an end and we take a moment to reflect, we can say that we are incredibly proud of our girls.
Cross Country is not just about how fast an individual can run. It is about showing up, having fun, embracing the challenges of each course, persevering through the tough moments, and growing along the way, both as an athlete and as a person.
As staff, it is important that we expose the girls to new experiences and opportunities that challenge them and help develop their growth mindsets.
Ms Davison, Mrs Jackson and Mrs Lewis have loved every minute of being part of the AWESOME Rustenburg Cross Country community.
We are grateful for the support and well done to all our girls on a fantastic season!
Mackenzie Cup Water Polo Tournament
We would like to congratulate the girls on their effort and commitment throughout the weekend.
The team played matches from Friday 11 September 2026 through to Sunday 13 September 2026, facing a tough and competitive festival, but they continued to fight and support one another until the very end.
The team also had to manage a number of injuries and illnesses throughout the weekend, which made their determination even more impressive.
A special mention must go to our two U12 players, Annabel Verhage (6b) and Willow de Klerk (6a), who stepped up to play for the U13A team. Despite being younger than the majority of the players in the festival, both girls showed tremendous confidence, courage and maturity. We are incredibly proud of the way they embraced the challenge.
Well done to the entire team and a huge thank you to Ms Banks for accompanying and supporting the girls throughout the festival.
Well done to our U12 Hockey girls who represented Rustenburg at the Bishops Day/Night Hockey Festival. The girls travelled back early from their Grade 6 camp to take part in the festival and, despite being tired after a busy camp, they showed up, giving their all until the very end.

Cancer affects so many families and communities, and sadly, our school community is not untouched by its impact.
We are incredibly proud of a group of Grade 5 learners and their families who have come forward with a heartfelt initiative to support a fellow learner currently undergoing treatment for leukaemia, while also raising funds for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa.
Part of the funds raised will go towards purchasing a Kindle for our learner, giving her access to digital books to enjoy while receiving treatment and spending time in hospital. The remaining funds will be donated to CHOC, supporting their invaluable work with children and families affected by childhood cancer.
Our Karri collection is now open, giving our wider school community the opportunity to contribute to this special initiative.
It is wonderful to see our learners and families rallying around one another with such compassion and care. Together, even the smallest contributions can make a meaningful difference.
We will continue to share updates with our school community as the campaign progresses.
