This term has seen many of our Rustybugs and their teachers exploring new ways of doing things whilst completing their projects and being involved in project-based learning (PBL) units. They have engaged intensely in research about various topics, learning a wide range of skills along with it. Many of the learning opportunities have allowed space to make connections between concepts, skills and subjects. Along the way, they have been exposed to new ICT tools. Going forward, it will be important to consolidate these skills that will help to prepare them for their future in a diverse world of jobs that do not exist yet!
Over the last two weeks, various officials from the Western Cape Education Department have visited RGJS to see learning in action, particularly as it relates to ICT use in the classroom and PBL. To say that they were all blown away by what our Rustybugs are capable of would be an understatement! None of this would be possible without our teachers putting in much effort to develop and hone their own skills and long hours to prepare for the richness of learning that we are seeing across the grades. As with all things, we will reflect on what has worked and what needs improvement so that we can continue to grow!

Principal
Our condolences to Natalie Turner on the passing of her brother.
Our thoughts are with you and your family during this very sad time.
WELCOME TO THE TEAM!
We welcome Resuragum Rhode to our Foundation Phase team in January 2024.
Resuragum currently is the Grade 3a substitute teacher. We are delighted to welcome her as a permanent staff member in 2024.
"I have an energetic 5-year-old son who loves to play soccer and Xbox gaming. If we are not on a soccer field, we are roller skating, playing games, or building Spider-Man puzzles together. I enjoy being active, which includes walks, runs, and gym classes.
With a heart full of enthusiasm, I have been part of RGJS for over a year, starting as a Grade 3 learnership in 2022 to becoming a Grade 3 contract educator in 2023 and now honoured to be a permanent RGJS staff member for 2024."
We welcome Jessica Banks to our Foundation Phase team in January 2024.
I am a Cape Town lover with a passion for education and creating a safe, loving and growth mindset classroom environment. I am currently completing my Masters in the Psychology of Education. When I am not immersed in school life, I enjoy adventuring in our mountains and oceans, dancing, as well as cherishing quality moments with my family and bulldog. I have an unapologetic love for everything pink and coffee. I am so looking forward to being a part of the Rustybug family!
We welcome Lorensha Weavers to our Learnership team in January 2024.
"I'm 25 years old. I come across as quiet, but I like trying out new fun things. I enjoy taking pictures of nice places so I love nature as well as outdoor activities like hiking. I like watching movies and love good music. I recently started enjoying reading. I love long rides as well as traveling.
We welcome Dominique Maritz to the Intermediate/Senior Phase team in January 2024
"Teaching is an absolute passion of mine, and I am so excited to start teaching at Rustenburg Girls' Junior School! I know that the next year will be filled with tons of fun, learning and endless adventures! My full name is Dominique Andrea Maritz and next year is going to be my fourth year as a teacher. I love teaching all subjects, but Science and English are my favourites! I was raised in Cape Town and matriculated from Wynberg Girls' School. I graduated from Varsity College and taught for two years at John Graham Primary School. I decided to spread my wings and moved to Dubai, with my husband, to teach for a year without any family or friends. I am so happy to be back home in my favourite country, South Africa! When I am not grading papers or planning lessons, you can find me at the gym, spending time with my family, reading as many books as possible or doing absolutely anything outdoors! I love all animals, journalling, iced coffees, travelling and I am an absolute foodie at heart! It is my mission to instill a love for learning in my students and I hope to develop lifelong learners in all whom I may have the privilege to teach. I look forward to being part of the Rustenburg Girls' Family."

On Wednesday 6 September our Bug Buddy Familes spent their breaktime together.
On Wednesday 6 September the Grade 2 teachers turned the Orton Hall into a camping site that included tents, camping chairs, shining stars in the "sky", glow sticks, and even a "roaring campfire" on the big screen! The Grade 2s entered the hall and made their way excitedly through the campsite, eventually taking up their seats in different tents, on picnic blankets, camping chairs, around the campfire, all ready for their PBL experience. The PBL launch was a success and it made the girls excited to learn more about their ‘Life at Night’ PBL unit.

On Thursday 7 September, Gill Gildenhuys accompanied our Rustybugs to the SAMF AMESA final round at Belvue Primary School. It is a huge achievement to have qualified!
Of the 85 000 learners who wrote the first round, 16 000 qualified to write the second round. We are very proud of these girls who featured in the top 100 learners per grade, nationally. They were "treated" to a problem-solving workshop before writing the very challenging final paper. They agreed that it was a great day out!
The Academic Team welcomed our Grade 4-7 parents/guardians to a Parent Talk on Tuesday 5 September. There have been a number of queries relating to assessment procedures and policies at RGJS which we were able to unpack at this particular meeting. Some of the discussion points included:
* The purpose of assessments
* The moderation process (before/during/after assessments)
* Why RGJS no longer streams Mathematics classes
* Why learner assessment scripts are not sent home
* Why Grade averages are not reflected on the termly reports
We thank the few parents who engaged in robust, fruitful discussion around this topic.
Thank you to the incredible Team of RGJS Parents who have been sorting our LOST PROPERTY every week and attempting to return all items to their owners. We still have loads of items that are UNMARKED which makes it very difficult to return them to the correct child.
Weekly all Lost Property items are sorted and all labeled items are returned to their owners.
Please complete this FORM if your daughter has lost any items.
Thank you to all our families who donned their checked shirts and cowboy hats and joined us for the Barn Dance on Friday night. The hall was full of excited Rustybugs and a few "out of breath" adults! Who knew that line dancing could actually be a "workout" as well! Thank you to Caroline and Sam who showed us all the moves, a great evening of fun was had by all who attended.

SPORT
The u/12 hockey girls had a ball of a time at the day/night festival at Herschel and Bishops. The girls had some nail-biting moments with Carryn Wiseman, the goalie, showing true courage in an intense showdown against Sweet Valley. The girls came 4th overall and showed good manners, both on and off the field. Good job, Rustybugs!
CONGRATULATIONS to our U13A Netball Team for winning Inter-Schools Netball on Wednesday 6 September.
Well done to ALL our teams, we are so proud of you.
Thank you to all our Netball families for their support and lifts over the past two terms.
Thank you to all our coaches, we appreciate you ALL.
Well done to the RGJS U13A hockey team for coming joint 9th with our good friends, Herschel.
What an amazing achievement for our girls - 128 schools have spent almost 6 months competing in the runup, hoping to gain a place in the Top Schools line up. Injuries, illness, blood, sweat and tears - nothing could deter our girls from their goal to make Top Schools and they DID! The 2023 season has only seen us concede 12 goals from the AGF tournament in March through to Inter Schools on Monday 11 September. 1 goal conceded at Top Schools and 1 at Inter Schools - what an incredible achievement!
A huge thank you to our parent support group - who were unfailing in their lift clubs, first aid, food, drinks, oranges, steri stumpies, extra socks, shirts, skorts. Your love and attention and passion for the game has carried our girls and helped them realise their dream.
The Inter-Schools Hockey Tournament held at Wynberg Girls' Junior School was a remarkable showcase of talent, passion, and sportsmanship. This thrilling event spanned two days, with the A side competing on Monday against eight formidable schools. They were led by Coach Clinton Maart and team manager Mrs Barrish-Liddle.
The A side team displayed their exceptional skills and determination, only losing one game while triumphing in four and securing draws in two others. Their stellar performance earned them well-deserved silver medals and a second-place finish, with Herschel clinching the top position.
On Tuesday, the second 11 hockey girls took to the field with equal determination - led by coach Mrs Marx and team manager Miss Barnes. Their tenacity paid off as they secured silver medals and a second-place finish, trailing closely behind Herschel. With three victories, two draws, and one loss, they showcased their dedication and skill, making the school incredibly proud.
The Rustybugs, as they affectionately call themselves, not only exhibited great sportsmanship during their matches but also displayed the same spirit off the field.
The Inter-Schools Hockey Tournament at Wynberg Girls' Junior School was a testament to the talent and sportsmanship of the participating teams.
Well done girls!!

Well done to our girls and to their inspiring teacher, Ms Rina Schutte.
