BUG NEWS

1 June 2023

Verband - Ek is verbind met ander en die wêreld om my. Ek gee om vir mense en die natuur. Ek kan myself wees en ek voel dat ek behoort.

Imidibaniso - Ndinxibelelene nabanye kunye nehlabathi jikelele. Ndibakhathalele abantu nendalo. Ndiziva ndindim kwaye ndililungu lalapha.

Connection - I am connected to others and the world around me. I care about people and nature. I can be myself and I feel like I belong.

Last week, Mrs Harris and I had the privilege of attending the annual South African Girls' Schools Association (SAGSA) conference in Pretoria. The theme of the conference, Unlock to Unlimit, really stretched our thinking and broadened our minds to the joys, possibilities and challenges of leading girls' schools. Not only were we treated to phenomenal speakers who are experts in their fields, we also had the opportunity to build connections with other girls' schools from 7 different provinces. All the principals and deputy principals in attendance realised that we all face similar challenges in the current education climate, no matter if we represent primary or high schools, public or independent schools.

In addition, it is also wonderful to be part of a strong girls' schools network in the Western Cape which we hope to grow and strengthen over the coming years. We all have a common purpose to educate girls' to become future women leaders in society. This is the power and beauty of connection!

HOD IP/SP

I am in my 35th year of teaching and this year marks my 11th year at RGJS.   Family First for me - especially spending time with my niece and two nephews.  I enjoy reading, watching cooking shows (but not actually cooking) and spending some time on my brother’s farm.

Tasneem van der Merwe

Grade 6a

This is my 16th class of Rustybugs and I still love the energy that the girls bring to the room. I am at my happiest when spending my free time with family and special friends and I love the bonds that I have forged with colleagues who, over years, have become friends. My children, even though they are all adults, fill my time with endless shopping trips for unhealthy snacks and new board games. My house is always filled with unrestrained laughter and cliched jokes. My little Liyah is her Granny's favourite person and spending time with her is my greatest joy.

Lijani Wallander

Grade 6b

I have been at RGJS for little over a year now, started in Grade 4 and now all grown up in Grade 6.

I enjoy being active, lifting weights in the gym and spending time with my friends and family.

I am a food and wine farm fanatic! I love trying new places over the weekends and I try not to visit the same place twice.

Grade 6c

I will be leaving Rustenburg at the end of July and moving with my husband to the UK.  As the end of my time at Rustenburg slowly draws near, I am definitely feeling mixed emotions. I am excited to be pursuing my passion for adventure and travelling but there is a lump in my throat when I think about what I will be leaving behind. I have been so privileged to teach the most incredible girls at this school. Every year, they have challenged, inspired and reminded me why I went into teaching in the first place. My colleagues have become friends and it will be hard to say goodbye to everyone. However, I am comforted by the fact that South Africa will always be a plane ride away and once a Rustybug, always a Rustybug!

Sanele Nkomombini

Grade 6 Learnership

Hi, my name is Sanele Nkomombini. I have a passion for Mathematics because I love numbers. I love working with kids which is why I ended up in the profession of teaching.

Outside school I’m involved in sport and I play soccer during weekends and that’s what keeps me fit physically and mentally. I love reading as I’m interested in knowing what’s happening around me and through that I gain knowledge.

Cayla Poelmann

Grade 7a

I'm a social butterfly with a passion for dance and staying active. Whether it's action netball, outdoor sports, or hitting the dance floor, I find joy in moving my body and embracing the rhythm of life.

Being social is in my DNA, and I thrive in the company of others. Alongside my love for exercise, dance has always held a special place in my heart.

When I'm not dancing or playing sports, you'll often find me at the gym, attending classes with my friends by my side. Together, we sweat it out, pushing each other to reach new heights and celebrating our achievements as a team.

The thrill of travel is something that truly excites me, and I can hardly contain my anticipation for my upcoming adventure. This June-July, I'll be embarking on a journey to Greece for the very first time. The thought of exploring its breathtaking landscapes, immersing myself in its rich history, and embracing the local culture fills me with a sense of wonder and adventure.

Passion drives me in everything I do, both personally and professionally. Making a positive impact wherever I go is a core value of mine. Although I'm taking a step out of education, I eagerly embrace the unknown future, ready to seize new opportunities and leave a lasting mark on the world.

In my world, dance, fitness, socialising, and travel intertwine to create a vibrant tapestry of experiences. I believe that life is meant to be lived to the fullest, and I'm committed to making the most of every moment. Through my love for dance, my dedication to staying active, and my desire to connect with others, I hope to inspire those around me and spread joy wherever my journey takes me.

Grade 7b

I am married with two children. My daughter is currently studying at UCT and my son works at a private lodge in the Kruger Park. I love gathering with friends and family, cooking, sampling bubbles and anything musical.

I am loving teaching the Grade 7 girls and am back in my happy space.  We tend to have a lot of fun while we learn. I look forward to what lies ahead for this year with the girls.

Gail Barrish Liddle

Grade 7c

I love children/ people, reading, being outdoors, sport, serious cooking/baking, all things medical, science, maths, FEliCIA 😂 . I also love being barefoot  and sleeping late in the holidays

Grade 2 Outing - Nature Plays Forest School

The Grade 2's have been very fortunate to go on not one, but two outings this term. Our second outing was run by a company called Nature's Play and it was held at the Alphen trail in Constantia. The girls spent the morning in the forest learning all about Rainforests. They made what was called a journey stick which required them to pick up special objects in the forest and attached them to this stick. They were also placed into groups and together they created beautiful terrariums. Once this was done they ended off the fun and informative morning with hot chocolate in the forest! This outing tied in with our project-based learning experience this term, which has the driving question. ”We are going on an expedition to the rainforest. Can you survive the rainforest?”
