Ubuntu - Ngalo lonke ixesha ndizama ukuba ngumntu olungileyo. Umntu ngumntu ngabanye abantu.Nangona sonke sahlukile, sibanye.
Humanity - I am always learning to be a good human being. A person is a person through other people. Although we are all different, we are also the same.
Menswaardigheid - Ek leer altyd om 'n goeie mens te wees. 'n Persoon is 'n persoon deur ander mense. Alhoewel ons almal verskillend is, is ons ook dieselfde.
I have been astounded this term at how much our Rustybugs and greater school community are embracing the value of ubuntu. It is not just a word adorning our pillars and hallways. It is something we are living. I have been encouraged by the ideas and actions of various people within our school to truly make a difference, whether it be with school-run projects or their own initiatives outside the school. This kind of commitment to interconnectedness and humanity gives hope for the future. Our Rustybugs are seeing first-hand what it really means to care for others and nurture potential. This starts with recognising that we all have a part to play and the smallest deeds often make the biggest impact (impembelelo)!
Well done to all our Rustybugs, staff and families for living the value of ubuntu!
Proudly Rustenburg!

MEET OUR STAFF
This week meet our Grade 7 and Marketing & Communication Teams.
Gr 7a
I am a dedicated wife and mother of two children, Oliver and Emily.
I prioritise family time alongside my passions. I find joy in running, love to indulge in a good book and cherish moments spent with close friends and family.
As a passionate Grade 7 teacher, I adore my girls and enjoy interacting with them while teaching in creative ways.
Despite my busy schedule, I love to travel and consider it bucket list material!
Grade 7b
Who am I?
I’m an enthusiastic, funny (I think I am), crazy teacher who is going to make sure your daughter goes off to high school as a confident, bold and hopefully crazy too, young lady.
I’m a wife of 27 years who deserves a medal. Applause!
I’m a mother of a 26 year old son who is a field guide and is passionate about the bush, animals and nature and a 21 year old daughter who is studying film and media at UCT and wants to make documentaries so she can give a voice to those that need to be heard.
I’m a bubbles lover, theatre goer, book reader, cooking enthusiast. I am not everyone’s cup of tea.
I am ME!!
Grade 7c
Richard and I have been together for a lifetime. We have 4 adult children, 2 furry grandchildren, and a loft full of Fed winners. I love being outdoors and barefoot, especially at the beach.
During the holidays I binge read, cook and sip, and sleep late if I’m not traveling. I love the old cities in Europe and Asti has a special place in my heart .
Marketing and Communications
While walking along the Rustenburg grounds, a Rustybug stopped me and said, "Excuse me, sir, you look so happy." At that point, I knew that fatherhood looks good on me. I am a DaDa to a sweet 1-year-old 'baby Thuto'.
My journey at Rustenburg started in 2021 and it has been a pleasant experience to contribute to the RGJS community. To sum up my time at RGJS, I leave you with this: One of the greatest joys in life is doing what you love.
PTA and Communications
I am a proud mum of three wonderful daughters and the happy wife of Andrew! We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary in December 2023 and are currently enjoying a "bucket list" holiday in New York! We have a beautiful 2-year-old granddaughter Charlotte and another one on the way towards the end of June!
I love my job at Rustenburg, especially all of the fabulous people I work with and the special Rustybug families I engage with daily.

On Tuesday 7th May our Grade 7 and Foundation Phase Bug Buddy families enjoyed a time of connection together playing games in the playgrounds.
Tamsyn Alfino addressed Grade 5 parents about Emotional Intelligence in Tweens on Wednesday 8th May. She really got us thinking about how our children are feeling, especially with everything going on right now. Alfino talked about how important it is for children to understand their emotions and to be able to handle tricky situations.
Alfino gave us some great tips on how we can help our tweens through all of this. She stressed the importance of talking openly with our children about their feelings and making sure they know it's okay to express themselves. In the end, Alfino left us feeling like we have the tools to support our tweens through these tough times. By being understanding, empathetic, and keeping up with the changes around us, we can help our children navigate their emotions and relationships with confidence.
Exploring the Wonders of the World: A Day at the Museum and Planetarium!
This Wednesday was buzzing with excitement as our Grade 5s geared up for an adventure to the Cape Town Museum and the Planetarium. Oh, the anticipation was noticeable as they eagerly awaited their departure from school.
Embarking on a guided tour filled with intriguing lessons, our girls found themselves immersed in the wonders of the Discovery Room. Imagine skeletons and specimens of animals indigenous to South Africa coming to life before their very eyes! It was like stepping into a time capsule as they explored artefacts from the world of hunter-gatherers, connecting the dots from their history lessons. What’s more, our knowledgeable instructor sprinkled in some fascinating anecdotes, sharing insights from modern-day San visitors who shed light on our past. It's incredible how new knowledge is constantly unfolding and weaving into our understanding of the world.
But wait, there’s more! The main museum awaited, unveiling the secrets of dinosaur fossils unearthed right here in South Africa. Awe swept over our learners as they viewed the ancient Lydenburg Heads, realising the profound history encapsulated within these artefacts. It’s moments like these that truly broaden young minds and ignite a passion for exploration.
As the day drew to a close, we ventured into the depths of the Planetarium, where our girls embarked on an interstellar journey through the Solar System. Picture their wonder as they grasped the vastness of space, the miniscule size of our planet Earth in comparison to the cosmos.
All in all, it was an immensely successful day, with girls left wanting more museum adventures. So, don’t be taken aback if your daughter comes home brimming with excitement, begging for another trip to soak in the marvels of the museum.
Here’s to fostering a love for learning and exploration in our amazing Grade 5s!
The Grade 4 girls recently embarked on a historical journey at Groot Constantia, led by the Centre for Conservation Education. Guided through the intricacies of carts and their significance, they explored the lives of Cape Town's owners and governors from the 17th to the 19th centuries. This immersive excursion allowed them to delve into the rich heritage sites and gain insight into the daily lives of people during that era.
Randy Pausch's statement, "Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things humans can do for each other," truly encapsulates the achievement of the RGJS Service Society and Grade 7s Outreach in their recent celebration honouring Nurses Day at Mowbray Maternity Hospital. On the occasion of Florence Nightingale's birthday, we extended our deepest appreciation to the nurses whose unwavering dedication uplifts our community each day. On Saturday morning (very early), Rustybugs arrived at school with baked goods and ready to ice cupcakes. After all of the preparation, they headed to Mowbray Maternity Hospital to set up and serve tea for the nurses on duty. The nurses were incredibly grateful and thoroughly enjoyed their treats and the poem that the Rustybugs recited. Thank you to all the Rustybugs (and their parents) who were involved and contributed to this celebration!
On Friday 10 May, Rustenburg entered the first round of the Inter Schools General Knowledge Quiz held at Edgemead Primary. The team consisted of Julia Cox Gr 6a, Zahra Hamdulay Gr 7b, Faatimah Long Gr 6c, Kgalaletso Maimane Gr 7b, Emma Mavian Gr 7c and Maddison Wallace Gr 7c. Well done to our team for participating and we look forward to the second round next term.

MUSIC
The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra visits RGJS!
Normally it takes the purchasing of a ticket, an evening outing and a visit to a concert hall to watch the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Not so on Tuesday - the CPO visited us!
It was such a privilege to watch a spell-binding performance of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf in our own school hall. This is what our girls had to say afterwards:
"I liked the sound of the clarinet." - Kopano, Gr 3
"I liked that they played the music together so nicely." - Relebohile, Gr 3
"It takes a lot of practice, but they all played together so well that it sounded like one instrument." - Olivia, Gr 3
" I thought the costume and hats were funny and I really enjoyed it." - Hanaa, Gr 5
" I loved the way the violin section supported the clarinet when she had her solo." - Cathryn, Gr 6
If you'd like to find out more about the CPO, take a look at their website here.
It was wonderful to have some Rustybugs in the audience at Mrs Burden's and Mr Williams' performance with the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra on 14 May.
Names: Mrs Burden, Eva vd Westhuizen, Leila vd Westhuizen, Liza Makogon, Mr Williams, Katlego Sello, Miss Jamey, and Cathryn Dam.
Thank you to our Rustybugs for supporting their teachers.
🎶 Grade 7 Music Workshop Showcase: A Night of Talent and Magic! 🎵
On the evening of Tuesday, May 14th, our hearts were filled with joy as we gathered to celebrate the musical talents of our Grade 7 students. From soulful melodies to electrifying beats, our audience was treated to a delightful array of performances that showcased the dedication and passion of our young musicians.
As the notes danced through the air, we were reminded once again of the extraordinary power of music to touch our souls and unite us in harmony.
To all the Grade 7 musicians who graced us with their talent, we extend our heartfelt congratulations. Your hard work and dedication have truly paid off, and we couldn't be prouder of each and every one of you.
Let us continue to cherish the beauty of music and the joy it brings to our lives.
Here's to many more unforgettable moments filled with melody, rhythm, and endless inspiration!

Congratulations to Julia Cox, Gr 6a, who is passionate about all things mathematical! She completed several very challenging mathematics olympiads to finish in the Top 16 of the Upper Primary division to qualify for the 2024 South African International Mathematics teams.
We are so proud of you, Julia, well done!
Congratulations to Amélie Hope Gr 6a, who recently participated in the International Global Canvas Art Competition 2024.
Each year David Shepard Wildlife Trust hosts an international art competition for children aged 4-16 years. For this year’s competition, the theme was ‘The Barometer of Life’, based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List, which is known by the same name. A barometer measures atmospheric pressure to help us prepare for bad weather. The ‘Red List’ of threatened species measures the pressures acting on species and how many are left, which helps governments and wildlife charities prevent extinctions. Children had to choose a species on the red list and create a masterpiece in any medium or size they wanted. They had to document their artistic journey and submit a 1-minute video accompanying their artwork to explain their choice of species, what they loved about the species and what the current status is on the endangered list.
Amélie chose the blue macaw – currently less than 4000 birds are left in the wild.
With 1,828 entries from 71 countries, this year’s competition was the biggest yet. We are delighted to announce that Amélie was shortlisted under the individual category into the top 50 finalists, across all age groups (4-7 yrs; 8-11yrs; 12-16yrs) who were invited to attend a live streaming event.
Despite not placing in the top 3 in her age category, it is still a phenomenal achievement.
Vienna’s Village Charity Paint Off – Dog Kennels for Stray Dogs of Ocean View Charity
Amélie and her mum attended a charity paint-off on Sunday 5 May. Each year, kennels, blankets, food and medicines are donated in aid of the stray dogs within the townships.
Once the kennels are painted in vibrant colours and themes, they are placed around Ocean View so that the stray dogs have a warm bed to sleep in during winter months.
Amélie and her crew placed second in the competition – winning a hamper for her own furry friend, Odie.
Well done Amélie, we are so proud of you.
