Every year I think that we have had the best Founder's Day yet, and this year was no exception! The energy and enthusiasm to celebrate all things Rustenburg was shared by our youngest Grade R Rustybugs, experiencing their first assembly, to our oldest Rustybug alumnae who attended our school decades ago! There were too many "goosebump" moments to share!
We descended into darkness with lots of screams and giggles. Thanks to my amazing helpers, we learnt that even though our light is sometimes dimmed or hidden, it never really disappears. Sometimes we may be too busy or only think about ourselves. Sometimes we have talents and things we do well, but we don't always share them with others. Perhaps we have days when we may say or do something unkind. Our ability to be kind and resepctful doesn't disappear, but we must choose to let the goodness shine again.
When we shine our light, it changes how others feel and brings us all joy. Even though we are all different, we should respect the light within each other.
Let's shine brightly!

Condolences to Lijani Wallander on the loss of her uncle.
Condolences to Thandokazi Mayo on the loss of her uncle.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families during this very sad time.
On Saturday, 31st January, numerous staff members attended their first session of Insights Training with Owen Henderson.
Time was spent unpacking their personality profiles, building self-awareness and getting to know one another on a deeper level.
On Friday, 6th February, our staff attended their second Safeguarding workshop. The staff were given in-depth information on the importance of safeguarding, the role of the Designated Safeguarding Officers (DSOs) and the duty of care we all have to our Rustybugs.
Thank you to those in our parent community who were able to attend the online information session on Tuesday evening. The insightful Q&A time was meaningful as parents had the opportunity to understand their role in ensuring a strong safeguarding culture, especially as it relates to children's exposure to the digital world.

ROXANNE GREEF
GR 2a TEACHER
Every year in teaching brings new opportunities to learn, laugh, and grow. As I step into my 6th year of teaching at Rustenburg, I’m so excited to continue this journey of growing and thriving alongside the wonderful girls in the Foundation Phase.
My day is instantly brightened when I arrive at school and am welcomed by so many happy, smiling faces — it truly is the best way to start the day!
At home, I’m kept just as busy (and smiling) by my bouncing 4-year-old daughter and my amazing husband, who are the absolute lights of my life. I treasure the memories we make together — and of course, the millions of kisses I receive from my daughter every single day.
My favourite words of all? “I love you, Mommy!” 💖
LEE-ANNE PRINSLOO
GR 2b TEACHER
I am in my 7th year at Rustenburg, and I truly enjoy working with my learners each day.
I'm happily married and a proud mom to a wonderful little boy who will soon be turning two.
Outside of school I love spending my free time with my family and making the most of special moments together.
KHALIPHA MGOBOZI
GR 2c TEACHER
Hello! I’m Khalipha. This is my fourth year living in Cape Town, so I think it’s safe to officially call myself a Capetonian now - lol. I’ve really grown to love the city, its energy, and everything it has to offer.
Outside the classroom, I enjoy slowing down and recharging. You’ll often find me taking a good nap, drawing/colouring, reading a book, or rewatching my favourite shows - currently Grey’s Anatomy (again!). I also enjoy playing PlayStation and exploring new restaurants with my partner.
My love for cooking is slowly growing and I enjoy learning new recipes whenever I can.
Learning is something I truly value, both personally and professionally. I recently completed my Honours degree at the University of Cape Town and I’m excited to be embarking on my Master’s journey this year. I’m always eager to grow, learn new things, and bring that passion for learning into everything I do.
AVIWE BULANI

My name is Aviwe Bulani.
I like soccer and Anime.
I have a dog, Zinzi.
My favourite teams are Orlando Pirates and Manchester City.
KIM INGPEN
GR 3a TEACHER
Mrs Ingpen, I am a born teacher, now in my 23rd year of teaching, and I absolutely love what I do.
I am a proud mom to a handsome boy who has just started high school, and I’m married to a wonderful man who is also celebrating 23 years in education. We share our home with one adorable dog, Bosley, who insists on daily walks through our backyard, a Forest.
When I’m not juggling three schools, you’ll find me soaking up nature or enjoying time at the Dalebrooke pool. I love starting each day with coffee, and I always try to find the rainbow in every day🌈
KHAMELAH SADIE
GR 3b TEACHER
Returning to the classroom has truly filled my heart again. There is something incredibly special about being back in a learning space where children grow in confidence, curiosity and show kindness every single day. Once a Rustybug, always a Rustybug and that has certainly proven true for me.
Teaching has always been more than a job; it is a space where I get to nurture, encourage and celebrate each child as an individual. I strive to create a classroom where learners feel safe, seen and proud of their efforts.
Outside of school, my home is my safe and calming space, the place where I reset and reconnect after a busy day. My greatest joy is being a mom to my four children. They are at that age where friends are far more exciting than mom, so whenever they choose to spend time with me, I take it with both hands and a very grateful heart.
RESURAGUM RHODE
GR 3c TEACHER
Hi! I’m Resuragum Rhode, and I’m excited to be in my fifth year at Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School, where I teach Grade 3C.
I have a lively 7-year-old and an amazing partner who keep me busy with sports and adventures.
In my spare time, you’ll usually find me enjoying a rugby-filled afternoon, cheering on the Stormers with my boys.
KRISTEN JOHNSON
STUDENT TEACHER
I’m currently in the home stretch of my studies (yay!). When I’m not hitting the books, you’ll find me baking something sweet in the kitchen, recharging in the pool, or out exploring with my two fur babies.
While I appreciate a peaceful weekend, I also live for a good adrenaline rush.
I am excited to see what this year holds for all of us!
HEAD OF ICT
My name is Catherine Pike and I am a proud Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School alumna who has come full circle as a former learner, student teacher and educator of over 16 years at RGJS. I currently serve as the ICT Departmental Head and am passionate about bringing learning alive in creative, meaningful ways — even if that means making a fool of myself on stage dancing to the theme song!
Outside the classroom, I am a busy mom to a one-year-old human baby and an eight-year-old fur baby. I love to bake, spend time outdoors, and try out new activities and places around Cape Town. I am grateful to be part of the Rustenburg community as I continue to learn, grow and have fun alongside my learners.
CODING & ROBOTICS TEACHER
I joined Rustenburg in 2023 after moving from Ballito and teach Coding and Robotics, where I love helping learners develop creativity, problem-solving, and digital skills.
Outside of school, I’m passionate about art, hiking, and getting lost in a good book on my Kindle. I also spend plenty of time taxiing children to hockey and water polo. My family enjoys exploring, traveling, and camping together, and at home, I love training and walking our two lively rescue dachshunds.

HEAD OF SPORT
I am the Head of Sport and am married to the Deputy Head of Rondebosch Boys’ Prep, so our lives are jam-packed with school life. Outside of school, my family includes a very energetic and thoroughly spoiled Jack Russell who keeps us on our toes. We love spending time outdoors — hiking, mountain biking, and enjoying the beach whenever we can. Our favourite holidays are those spent in nature, whether by the sea or in the mountains.
I am a proud Rustybug, having attended Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School from Grade 1 through to matric at the high school, and I remain deeply passionate about the role sport plays in developing confident, resilient young people. I am fully committed to creating positive sporting experiences and helping young girls thrive on the sportsfield and beyond.
PE TEACHER
I am the Physical Education Teacher and Head of Swimming and Netball.
I enjoy outdoor activities with my family and all things sport.
I am Candice Davison, the "wingman" to my Sports Department colleagues and the girls of Rustenburg. My mission is simple: to make other people's lives a little less stressful and a lot more manageable.
With time and experience, I have embraced the understanding that growth comes through life's lessons. These moments have given me a renewed perspective on what truly matters and what simply isn't worth the stress. Outside of work, meaningful connections with friends and family are important. Sport and the outdoors go without saying; they have always been part of my DNA.
In this episode, we’re joined by Owen Henderson and Belinda Petersen to unpack Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School’s Five-Year Strategic Plan. Together, we explore the vision guiding the school’s growth and sustainability, its commitment to academic excellence and learner wellbeing, and how innovation, values, and inclusivity are shaping the future of RGJS. A thoughtful conversation on leadership, legacy, and purposeful planning in education.

RGJS IMPORTANT DATES TERM 1 2026
ALL SCHOOL INFORMATION, INCLUDING THE FULL CALENDAR, IS AVAILABLE ON THE RGJS SITE
Disabled Access - Please don't hesitate to contact admin@rgjs.org.za if you require wheelchair access or assistance with access to our school campus.
On Friday, 30th January, we celebrated 132 years of our wonderful school. We started this special day with a momentous assembly. Our youngest Rustybug, Imani Busakwe, Rb, oldest Rustybug, Anna Carstens, 7c and Rustenburg Alumnae and guest speaker, Amy Joy Davids, walked into our assembly, holding the 132nd Birthday Candle.
Amy told amusing stories of her time at RGJS, like playing "Unicorn Unicorn". She shared positive memories from a comment a teacher made and how those positive words still impact her today. Amy encouraged our Rustybugs to believe in themselves and not to give up. There are going to be tough times, but they only make you stronger.
Mrs Belinda Petersen launched our theme for 2026, SHINE OUR LIGHT, after which Mrs Catherine Pike taught our Rustybugs, staff and guests our Shine Our Light Theme Song for 2026.
Our Alumnae enjoyed a tea and a tour of our school, reminiscing about the time spent in their "old classrooms". Some were even wanting to don one of the Swap Shop school dresses and return to school!
Our Rustybugs enjoyed creating an inspirational light bulb in their classes and making a birthday cake in their Bug Buddy family groups. A birthday celebration isn't complete without cake and ice cream, which is how we ended off our 132nd Founders Day!
Last week we had SINGING ASSEMBLIES led by Mr Alex van der Speck and Mrs Leah Smith.
On Monday, our Grade 7s received their leadership badges for 2026. Congratulations to our Grade 7s. We look forward to watching you grow in your leadership positions throughout the year.
On Tuesday, in our Foundation Phase assembly, our Grade 3 Team shared a message all about respect, our value for Term 1.
Together, we unpacked what respect really looks like in our daily lives, not only in the classroom, but everywhere we go. We spoke about respectful behaviour at school, at home and on the playground, and how our words and actions affect the people around us. Through our discussion, the girls came to understand that respect means caring about another person’s heart and that respect is how we show others that they matter. We reflected on using kind words, gentle hands and listening ears so that everyone feels safe and valued.
We also considered how respect extends to our shared spaces and daily routines. From entering and sitting quietly in the hall, to caring for our classrooms and bathrooms, and even showing patience and courtesy while travelling in cars and how respect is shown through the choices we make each day.
As we begin the year with our theme, “Shine Our Light,” we reminded the girls that every respectful choice helps their light shine a little brighter, and that kindness, patience and consideration are the ways we light the path for one another.
Our message was simple and meaningful:
Respect is not just something we say. It is something we practise everywhere we go, allowing each of us to shine our light.
We are proud of the thoughtful engagement shown as we continue to guide, learn and discover these values together.
We were delighted by the fantastic turnout for our Grade 4 Parent Talk, “Growing into Grade 4”. This year is an exciting time of growth and change for our learners as they move into the Intermediate Phase.
Our keynote speaker, Kate Stamper, a Foundation Phase teacher and remedial therapist with experience teaching Grade 4, shared valuable insights on supporting children during this transition. With an Honours degree in Psychology and Psycho-Educational Support, Kate emphasised that every learner develops at their own pace and encouraged parents to enjoy the journey with their children. She also offered practical tips on fostering independence, managing emotions, and building essential skills such as time management.

On Wednesday, 4th February, we celebrated WORLD READ ALOUD DAY.
Thank you to all our staff who read aloud to our Rustybugs.
The entire Grade 3 enjoyed a special visit from the Travelling Bee Lady in the school hall, where the girls had the exciting opportunity to meet her — and the bees! She shared fascinating facts about how a hive works, the important jobs bees do, and why they are essential for our plants, food and environment.
Using real beekeeping equipment and engaging storytelling, the girls learnt how bees pollinate flowers and how we can help protect them in our everyday lives. It was a memorable, hands-on experience that sparked curiosity and appreciation for these tiny but vital helpers.
It truly was a buzzing morning of learning and discovery for all!
During their drama lessons, our Grade 2 Rustybugs had fun with Mrs Carey Hickson-Mahony, writing poems for Valentine's Day ♥️
This week our Grade 2 learners visited Muizenberg Beach for their beach clean-up initiative. They embraced their role as young environmental ambassadors, learning the importance of caring for our oceans and surrounding environment. The outing was both meaningful and enjoyable, with learners enthusiastically collecting litter and proudly building creative sandcastles along the shore.
Our Grade 6 learners had a fantastic day out at Oude Molen in Pinelands! It was a hands-on learning experience filled with fresh air, discovery, and plenty of excitement.
A definite highlight of the day was the horse riding – a very special extra that the learners absolutely loved! For many, it was their first time on a horse, making it an unforgettable experience.
During the visit, learners explored different types of soil and learned how soil quality affects plant growth. They investigated decomposition and composting, discovering how organic matter breaks down and returns nutrients to the soil.
The learners also learned about germination and even made their own seed project to take home — something they can care for and watch grow themselves. This made the learning personal and exciting as they will now be able to observe the germination process firsthand.
They identified different plants and discussed what plants provide us with — food, oxygen, shade, and even medicine. Photosynthesis was explained in a practical way, helping learners understand how plants make their own food and support life on Earth.
It was a meaningful day where classroom learning truly came to life!
On Wednesday, 25th February, Cape Foto will be at school to take class and individual school photos of all new learners and staff. A reminder will be sent closer to the time. Should your class have PE on Wednesday, 25th February, learners are to come to school in their school uniform for the photos and then change into their PE uniform for their lessons.

The water polo season has begun on an exciting and encouraging note. Our U13 team recently competed in the Reddam Action Polo Tournament, where they demonstrated remarkable grit, determination, and teamwork. The girls represented the school with pride, showing resilience in challenging matches and a growing confidence in their skills.
Our U10 team played their very first match, marking a special milestone for the programme. The girls had a fabulous time in the pool and embraced the experience with enthusiasm and courage. It has been wonderful to see their rapid improvement and growing understanding of the game. They are truly moving from strength to strength.
Across all age groups, the teams are playing with commitment, sportsmanship, and a strong team spirit. The progress made already this season is a testament to the girls’ hard work at practices and their willingness to learn and support one another.
We are eagerly looking forward to participating in the Herschel Summer Festival, where our teams will continue to develop their skills and enjoy the camaraderie that makes water polo such a special sport at our school.
