Class Structure
Students enrolled in newspaper classes will focus on the production and publication of the paper. This will will include the assigning of articles, interviewing and research for articles, peer editing, designing paper layout, and etc. Students will also read from professional publications as exemplars. Some class time will be spent in reviewing basic language conventions issues in mini lessons as needed.
Grades will be based holistically on student participation and completion of assigned articles. Occasionally, small quizzes or other assignments may be given on an as-needed basis.
The Newspaper staff is dedicated to publishing the long running, Raider Invader, a student produced newspaper. The Raider Invader provides news, information, and entertainment for the Reynolds student body, faculty, administration, support staff, and community. Most importantly, the paper's production allows an opportunity for staff writers and graphic designers to practice and improve practical communication skills.
Lesson Plans
Because the newspaper class functions as much like a real newsroom as possible, plans must remain flexible and tailored to individual student needs. As a result, weekly lesson plans are a poor fit in capturing our day-to-day operations and will not be posted. Any students who miss class due to absences will not have specific tasks to make up. Students are aware of deadlines assigned on a monthly basis and must compensate for missed time in a responsible way.
