Pennsylvania State law requires different examinations and screenings for school aged students. The following is a list of these mandated health requirements and which grade levels they apply to. Referrals will be sent home immediately after the screenings if your student did not pass according to the standard set by the Department of Health. At the end of the year, you will receive a health report card notifying your of your child's BMI and what category of growth they fit under according to the CDC's classification chart. This letter will also let you know if there are any other documents that you are still required to turn into the school nurse.
Private physical examinations are required upon entry into school and again in grades 6 and 11. Please note that physicals turned into a coach for sports purposes are acceptable but only if they are delivered to the school nurse. DO NOT rely on the coaches, especially at the elementary level, to turn these in.
Dental Examinations are required upon entry into school and again in grades 3 and 7. We do have a school dentist that comes in once a year (spring time) to examine those students who do not have a private dentist. Parental permission is required before the exams take place. Notification letters along with the consent form will be both mailed home and sent home with your student periodically throughout the year until this requirement is met. Results of those exams will be mailed home afterwards.
Vision screening. All students will have their vision screened on a yearly basis. Keep this in mind if your student wears glasses and gets yearly vision exams. Always keep the school updated on their vision needs and what we can expect their vision to be with their glasses on. A report of their vision exam is helpful especially when they fail our screening at school. Referrals will be sent home immediately after the screening if they did not pass.
Hearing tests are given to all students in kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 11th grades. Other students will be screened on an individual basis as indicated.
Scoliosis exams of the spine are given to students in grades 6 and 7. The exam will not be done for those 6th graders who have turned in their 6th grade physical before the exams are scheduled to be done at school.
Height & Weights will be done yearly. You will receive a letter at the end of the school year telling you what their BMI percentage is and what category they fall under according to the CDC's classification guidelines.
