AVOIDING PLAGERISM

Writing an essay or presentation? How do I make sure to avoid plagerism?

WHAT IS PLAGERISM? This is any time that you use someone else's words, pictures, graphics, data and claim them as your own by either failing to quote or cite the information properly.

HERE is a LOOM video that I made to try and assist with this idea more clearly.

Here are some valuble ideas:

Is what you are writing entirely your own thoughts and words?
Could you write the paper/essay/presentation "with your eyes closed"?
Did you use or need to research other sources? REMEMBER this is a good skill to have and I highly encourage using your resources
Follow THIS really helpful flowchart guide from Purdue Owl Resources
When in doubt...CITE (at a minimum, you need to provide the website source, but MLA is great practice)
There are lots of great citation tools: Purdue OWL, EasyBib, CitationMachine

For this activity you need to create a slide presentation about cystic fibrosis. Your will need to make sure that you include the following information:

What is/are the cause(s)?
What are the signs and symptoms?
What tools are used in diagnosis?
Are there any treatments? Are they effective? What do they treat?
What are some of the recent research and medical advancements in CF? Who does it help? How can it help

Unit 7 - The Digestive System

Activity 1: Gluten Intolerance

For this activity you are investigating gluten intolerance and celiac disease, an immune disease in which the body response to the consuption of gluten. You will need to make sure that you include the following information:

Research forms of gluten intolerance including celiac disease *PLEASE MAKE SURE TO CITE YOUR SOURCES and quote as needed*
- Are your sites reputable?
Create a report/brochure/infographic - it needs to demonstrate understanding of gluten intollerance AND celiac disease
- clearly presented

- uses scientifically correct information
- correct grammer and spelling

For this activity you need to create a presentation about cystic fibrosis. Your will need to make sure that you include the following information:

What are the signs and symptoms?
What is used to conduct testing for crohn's?
Are there any treatments? Are they effective? What do they treat?
PLEASE CELEBRATE YOUR HARD WORK - and cite your sources (see How to avoid Plagerism)

If you are tired of doing PowerPoint or Google Slides, consider using Prezi as these can be fun and different and a valuable presnation format to have (you can access basic features for free).

Unit 8 - The Urinary System

Activity 1: Urinary System Model

Goal: use everyday items to represent a model of the Urinary System

If you have the materials that it suggestes, please complete the lab as is and label and explain how each item represents the the parts of the urinary system. If you need or want to modify this list, PLEASE feel free to adjust based on the items you have available.

If you do not have these items or anything that you can use to build the model and take a picture, please know it is ok to draw this model and label what everyday item you would have used to complete this.

*IMPORTANT* it is still essential that you explain WHY you chose them everyday item you did in creating your model AND HOW each structure functions in the unrinary system.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS:

If you need to modify materials, PLEASE know this is always ok. Just let me know what you used as your alternatives and explain how these items functioned in the model.
If you are unable to set up the model itself, here are four video options you can choose from to use for observations. PLEASE let me know which video you watched and when answering the questions address the componants that were not represented in the model and what you think those would have done and what they represented.

If you have the materials available, please complete the lab and answer the questions provided (please let me know you actually did the lab).

1. What doe sthe sand mixture represent?
2. What doe sthe liquid in the mixture represent?
3. What part of the unianry system does the filter/coffee filter represent?
4. What part of the urinary system does the cup represent?
5. What happened to the color of the water as you poured out the water and added more regular water through the coffee filter? Why did this happen?
6. How does this model represent the function of the urinary system?

Unit 9 - The Immune System

Activity 1: HIV/AIDS Treatment

For this activity you are investigating treatment options for HIV and AIDS, a viral infection transmitted though the contact with some bodily fluids. You will need to make sure that you include the following information:

Research and differentiatet AIDS and HIV, the treatment options and why someone might choose an option. *PLEASE MAKE SURE TO CITE YOUR SOURCES and quote as needed*

Create a report/brochure/infographic - it needs to demonstrate understanding of treatment options - what are they, what does it require, how long does it last, possible side-effects?
