General Coordinator (job share)

KEY POINTS

We are looking for a person who is passionate about both waste reduction and cooperatives to work together with our Coordinator team in managing, leading and supporting the Resource Work Cooperative to achieve its aims of reducing waste, creating sustainable jobs and educating the public.

About us

Resource is a national leader in the waste minimisation industry, operating Tasmania's largest reuse centre (the Resource Tip Shop at South Hobart) and other waste reduction and recycling initiatives. Resource is one of the oldest and largest not-for-profit worker’s cooperatives in Australia.

Resource works with communities, businesses and local governments to achieve viable, sustainable, best-practice waste minimisation. The Resource Tip Shop delivers accessible, low-cost quality goods, and is a trusted reseller of a wide range of second-hand items. Resource undertakes a diverse range of projects and activities, including timber upcycling, scrap metal and ewaste processing, electrical testing, collectables research and sales, computer upcycling and online sales. Resource runs a free community pickup service for larger donations, and engages with the wider community through its annual Art From Trash exhibition. The Resource Work Cooperative works to continuously improve its business and operations, is supported by an innovative community education program, and aims to provide a safe and satisfying work environment.

About the role

The General Coordinator works as part of a team to be a leader and facilitator of the Cooperative, maintaining the members’ engagement and ensuring members uphold the principles of consensus. Major decisions are made by the entire cooperative at General Meetings held every 4 weeks.

The General Coordinator provides information and support to the Board of Directors and works closely with them to guide the strategic direction of the cooperative. They maintain communication between Resource and all key stakeholders, including Councils, government and industry bodies, and the local community. Working in concert with a team of Coordinators, the General Coordinator ensures compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory frameworks (including Resource policy and procedure), is responsible for the effective management of all Resource operations, provides organisational support to all Resource workers, and manages the day-to-day implementation of the Resource Strategic Plan.

The General Coordinator is a job-shared role, with a total of 4.5 days per week spread between two people. The advertised position will be 2 days per week, preferably Mon-Tue, with the other 2.5 days already filled and being worked Wed-Fri. The new General Coordinator will need excellent communication and organisational skills in order to collaborate and work effectively with the current General Coordinator.

Benefits of working at Resource

The most exciting aspect of joining a worker’s cooperative is the ability to contribute ideas and participate in decisions that guide the current and future strategic direction of the cooperative. This can be as small as changing the shop layout to as large as tackling a difficult-to-recycle waste stream or teaching the community how to combat textile waste. Working at Resource allows you to make a difference in the world, by tackling a range of waste challenges, working with like-minded people and modelling how well the cooperative model can work.

All workers at Resource have the opportunity to expand into different roles or work areas, as they arise and depending on interest and skills, with the potential to work additional days in other roles. Resource provides and supports a range of training and upskilling opportunities.

Other benefits:

Being fair, non-discriminatory and respectful are important elements of the Resource culture and core values. We value diversity and inclusion and apply these principles in our work place and throughout our recruitment processes. Resource actively encourages applications from people with a diverse range of experiences, ages and backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, people with different abilities, people who identify as LGBTIQA+ and people from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds.

How to apply

Please provide a current resume/CV and a document addressing each of the selection criteria (outlined above and in the position description) outlining your suitability for the role.
