A child or young person has a Special Educational Need if they have significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age.
There are 4 broad areas of need:
Communication & Interaction (CI)- Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Speech Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
Cognition & Learning (COG/L)- Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) such as: Dyslexic, Dyspraxic or Dyscalculic.
Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) – Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Sensory &/or Physical Needs – Hearing Impaired (HI), Visually Impaired VI, Physical Disability (PD)
