Week 1
Reconciling with our own scars
Reconciling with our own scars
We often mistakenly believe that reconciliation requires the complete erasure of our past pain or the "fixing" of our broken pieces. However, the Risen Christ returns to the upper room with his scars fully intact, suggesting that our wounds are not obstacles to God’s glory, but the very place where it is revealed.
On this "Holy Humor Sunday," we celebrate the ultimate subversion: that death tried to have the last word, but God turned the grave into a punchline. Internal peace begins when we stop hiding our history and instead allow our scars to become a sanctuary for ourselves and others.
Reading Resource: The Wounded Healer by Henri Nouwen. Learn how our own brokenness, when we stop hiding it, actually becomes the very place where we are best equipped to care for others.
Core Truth: My scars are not signs of defeat, but an invitation to God’s healing.
The Inside-Out Shift: Moving from hiding our history to honoring our survival.
The Practice: Spend five minutes looking at a physical scar or remembering an emotional one. Instead of turning away, offer it a "Holy Humor" smile, acknowledging that you survived and God is still at work.
Reflection: What if your scars are the map of your survival and an altar of your resilience?
Breath Prayer: Inhale: I am scarred. Exhale: I am sacred.
John O'Donohue
In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.
For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness growing inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.
It watched you play with the seduction of safety
And the gray promises that sameness whispered,
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent,
Wondered would you always live like this.
Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plenitude opening before you.
Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life's desire.
Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.
