The adolescent program at RCM is a project-based program inspired by Maria Montessori’s vision of an adolescent education rooted in peace education and committed to social justice, adaptability, and sustainable development.
We spent this year learning about the unique strength and beauty of our local people and environment, as well as the negative impacts on the local cultures and ecology that have occurred since the mid-1800s when settlers came to the area and began to dominate the established native cultures and the land on which they all lived. We asked ourselves, how can we contribute to the healing of Humboldt County?
Our project celebrates ecological and cultural healing to our area. Each student chose to learn about a solution to a local problem hurting our land or our people. Part of the students’ learning involved interviewing someone they admire who has worked professionally or voluntarily to bring cultural or ecological healing to our area, people we are calling "Humboldt Healers."
When our students asked their respective Humboldt Healers what they and our community could do to help, a consistent theme emerged: educate yourselves and educate others! When people are informed, they care. When they care, they act.
Welcome to our students’ field work! Here, students highlight their own learning while offering you a learning opportunity by sharing websites they created for you to explore.
