Reflect on the skills and knowledge you have gained in the past two months. What specific tasks, interactions, or experiences have helped you grow the most, and how do these skills align with what you might want to pursue after high school? I have gained a vast amount of knowledge about the medical field in the past two months. I have learned about many different departments and the specifics of what they do. One of the times that I learned most is when I was able to scrub into a surgery, I not only learned how to scrub in properly, but I also was able to see what the surgeon did, but he was also explaining it to me at the same time and I learned many things about it. Some skills I have gained are how to tie a tourniquet, how to re-calibrate and use a glucose measuring machine, and watch how vitals are taken at the beginning of appointments, or for inpatients, throughout the day.
What aspects of your internship have you found most engaging or enjoyable? One thing I have found very enjoyable about my internship is being able to feel like I am already in a healthcare career, and being able to experience lots of what I would in the future.
How has this experience influenced your perspective on potential career paths or further education? Are there areas you’re now more curious to explore, or new directions you’re considering for the future? I have gained insight on what I am leaning towards in healthcare. I have learned about many careers and parts of them that I did not know there were. For example, how many different areas you can go to as a nurse, and the different types of specialty clinics. I also appreciated the compassion that oncology had for their patients.
Over the past month, what have you learned about the profession you are interning in? How has your understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities or challenges in this field evolved? Over this past month I have learned that all of my co-workers have routines and certain ways they do things to make it faster or more efficient. For example, when prepping for surgery, they switch the jobs every few patients. They also have two people in there getting the job done faster, someone will chart while the other person gets vitals and does the IV. I have also learned that overtime, they have their own teqniques too.
Reflect on the skills you have developed or improved during the past three months. What tasks or experiences helped you build these skills, and which of these skills do you now feel most confident using? This month I learned a lot. One thing I learned was how to transport patients in wheelchairs. I also learned how to move hospital beds from room to room.
How has your comfort level in this professional environment changed since you began your internship? What specific moments or accomplishments made you feel more confident in your abilities? I would say that my comfort level has increased a lot since I first started. I got more comfortable with my coworkers and I also have more of a routine because I know what I'm doing. I would not say there were any specific moments that made me more comfortable, just happened over time.
