MCMH November Reflection
Throughout my experience at MCMH, I have learned how to read labels, organize food products and dishes, and many software and programs. These experiences have been in Blueprint, Date Code Genie, and Quick Charge. In Blueprint, I learned how to make recipes, enter quantity amounts, and read nutrition labels. After using Blueprint I was able to enter all the nutritional information and ingredients into Date Code Genie. In the date code, I adjusted prices, labels, and ingredients, formed new names for products and recipes, and generated new product codes. I was then able to enter the product code into Quick Charge so it would align with our POS system. At MCMH I have also taken inventory of dishes and coolers so we can get rid of things we don't need along with adding any new products that aren't in our system. While taking inventory I have gained more skills with Word and Excel. Another part of my experience has been reading about different diets that different patients might need. I have been able to sit in on sessions with diabetic patients where my advisors helped them make a food plan, set goals, and learn how to monitor their blood sugar. During one meeting I implemented a tool that I had learned at one of my other internships. This tool was learning how to set smart goals. Smart goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic/relevant, and time-bound. I would like to do some work with the marketing team/intern on developing a flyer for patience on how to make smart goals. With patients having this tool they would be able to achieve their goals and stay motivated with a clear line of what to do to get there.
In the first week of my internship, I got to sit in on the Petal Awards. The petal award was an important experience because it shows others nominating people for all the good they do in the hospital and won't let their hard work go unnoticed. During this meeting, I was able to meet new people and make connections throughout the hospital. During Halloween, many departments celebrated and dressed up bringing joy to everyone. I enjoyed organizing the store room because it gave me a little bit of freedom to be creative and use my organizational skills.
This experience has helped me learn about diets and nutrition and what goes into this profession. I think if I got to work or sit in on a larger variety of patients I would have a better idea if this profession is something I would like to pursue. For example, working with an athlete on their meal planning. I would like to explore some fitness, physical therapy or even marketing.
MCMH December Reflection
Over the past month, I have learned that there are many other departments in the hospital that work and collaborate with the dietitians. I’ve been able to be a part of this when it comes to working with the marketing department. I noticed that the dietitians are not only in charge of their patients but also making all the recipes and menus for the cafeteria.
During the month of December, I learned how to seal and stamp envelopes using different machines and knowledge. I continued my experience working with nutrition labels on food and interring recipe information into apps like date code, blueprint, and quick charge. A new skill I learned was making keypads. Keypads show up on the POS system. While working with other departments such as marketing I’ve learned new techniques and strategies when it comes to creating patient information. Smart goals are the main focus that I am working on with the marketing intern. From fonts, colors, and many other aspects we have started to create rack cards and worksheets for diabetic patients.
Throughout this internship, I have become more comfortable and confident talking with my advisors as well as other members of MCMH. Learning to communicate is a big skill and plays an important role in the work environment. Something that has helped me gain this confidence is being given the freedom to branch out and gain experience in many departments. My advisors do a great job of letting my voice be heard!
MWMH November Reflection
At MWMH I have learned how to do many front desk jobs. From scanning papers, entering client information, and scheduling appointments I have learned how to write excuse notes along with input insurance and intake paperwork. These are good skills to know because any front desk/ receptionist job will have similar work. One of the most helpful experiences was going over different disorders and what they all mean, what causes them, and how to recover if recoverable.
The aspect I enjoyed most was learning about all the different disorders and understanding why people act and think the way they do. The environment at MWMH was very important to me, the people are all very friendly and was easy to ask questions. Being able to talk to my advisors and co-workers about my future and what my internship can do for my future is also a big takeaway.
I would like to get some experience with a patient or sit in on a session to better see how one goes about listening and providing feedback to a patient. I would also like to know more about job opportunities in this field. For example sports psychology and working with athletes on their mindset and mental strength.
MWMH December Reflection
Over the past month, I have learned that it is hard especially during this time of year for both providers and patients. This month I started observing character traits from the movie The Breakfast Club.
During the month of December, I have continued my skills of uploading patient files and other front desk skills such as printing and faxing. I recently learned how to use DSM 5 to diagnose a character from The Breakfast Club. I looked at the criteria for a few different mental illnesses and concluded with anxiety and depression. My future goal is to create a treatment plan.
Like any job or internship, you create relationships. MWMH has given me a safe place to learn and create experiences where I’m not afraid to ask questions. I have been given challenges and helpful assignments to better my understanding of mental health disorders and how to help others.
