Curriculum overview

Science provides the foundations for understanding our world. Through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics, Science has changed our lives and is vital to our world’s future prosperity.

All students should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of knowledge and concepts, students should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.

hey should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes – skills essential for life-long learning.

Teaching and assessment at KS3

There are 3 main areas in which students will be taught and assessed at KS3. Lessons are generally structured into Core,Combine and Create tasks that develop different aspects of the course.

CORE

Recall of factual information - E.g what organelles are in a plant cell?

 COMBINE

Manipulation of information - E.g why do plants cells have chloroplasts but not animal cells?

CREATE

Analysis and interpretation - E.g Using your knowledge of cells justify what type of cell you are observing under the microscope

This principle is applied to all assessments and some homelearning tasks.  Student progress is monitored in each aspect and specific feedback can be used to develop overall progress in the subject.
