Redeemer Lutheran School THIRD GRADE Curriculum
Biblical Studies
The third grade Bible curriculum utilizes the series "One in Christ", as well as the true Word of God and Luther's Small Catechism. Through studying God's Word, students may learn and know of God and His amazing, unconditional love, and salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. In third grade, we will learn and understand various biblical stories and memory verses. Our study will include learning who God is and why we should study His Word, the gift of the Holy Spirit, as well as Martin Luther and his role in the church. We will also focus on the Law and Gospel. The Law shows our sin (SOS) and need for a Savior. The Gospel shows our Savior (SOS) and God's love to forgive our sins through Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection. Throughout the year we will memorize parts of Scripture and Luther's Small Catechism.
Math
In third grade math, we use the curriculum "Big Ideas Math." Students will be learning multiplication and division facts and strategies, rounding and estimating numbers, multidigit addition and subtraction, fractions, and graphing. In third grade math, there will be an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking. Students will practice using strategies to aid them in solving word problems and new concepts.
Language Arts
The third grade reading curriculum is MacMillian/McGraw Hill's "Wonders", which also contains Social Studies lessons through stories. This curriculum introduces students to a number of different story genres such as historical fiction, realistic fiction, and expository texts. We practice reading skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling using "Wonders". Each day will include independent reading in which each student may pick a book to read. As a class, students will learn about point of view, sequencing, and finding text evidence. At the end of the school year, we will conduct a novel study of the story "Charlotte's Web". Students will also develop and grow their writing and grammar skills through the Shurley Grammar curriculum. During the year, students will practice identifying parts of speech, writing and editing sentences, and completing writing assignments.
Science
The Christian science curriculum for third grade, Nancy Larson, helps students find connections between science topics and the Word of God. Students explore various science concepts through experiments, hands-on activities, videos, and workbooks. We will study the Solar System, Elements and Compounds, Physics, Meteorology, Geology, Botany, and Zoology. In each science unit, students will practice vocabulary words and take notes and complete activities in their workbooks. In this subject, students are assessed through participation, in class assignments, and quizzes.
