Who's it For: All Edgefield County Residents and those who work, shop, or seek care here.
This report brings together survey data, community voices, and insights from local employers, faith leaders, and service providers. It documents the barriers people face, highlights the resilience of families and congregations who piece together rides, and identifies practical steps the county can take. Most importantly, it reflects the voices of Edgefield's residents.
This report is not about roads and bridges. It’s about how transportation influences the health and wellness of people in Edgefield County every day!" -- Rick Berry, Walton Options for Independent Living, and ECWC Co-chair.
“In addressing the transportation needs in Edgefield County, we should be guided by faith principles as articulated in Matthew 25:31-46. When we do that type of ministry, we are serving Christ Himself.”
— Reverand Dr. Leonard O. Griffin, Old Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.
“I hear from families every week who can’t get to medical appointments or who skip follow-up care because they don’t have a ride. When people are isolated, they lose more than just an appointment. They lose connection.”
— Stephanie Hughes. Self Regional Healthcare and ECWC Chair.
“We lose good employees simply because they can’t get to work every day.”
— Local manufacturing employer.
Transportation gaps significantly impact access to work, healthcare, groceries, and daily life, particularly for older adults, families, and individuals without reliable transportation. This project collected community input to help shape real solutions for Edgefield County.
The mission of the Edgefield Community Wellness Coalition’s Transportation Needs Assessment is to identify and address transportation barriers that limit access to jobs, healthcare, education, and essential services. By collaborating with residents, employers, and community organizations, we have gathered actionable data and developed innovative solutions that enhance mobility, expand access, and improve the overall quality of life for residents of Edgefield County.
The Edgefield Community Wellness Coalition (ECWC) is a committee of the Edgefield Interagency Council (EIC), a network of nonprofits, service agencies, and local businesses committed to improving the lives of Edgefield County residents. While ECWC operates under the EIC umbrella, its committee members include both EIC members and other community partners dedicated to advancing wellness and access throughout the county. Walton Options for Independent Living serves as the fiscal agent for this project.
ECWC is leading a Transportation Needs Assessment to better understand how residents travel to jobs, healthcare, groceries, and other essential destinations. Funded by the South Carolina Office of Rural Health, this project brings together diverse voices to identify transportation challenges and shape future solutions that enhance mobility, equity, and well-being for all residents of Edgefield County.
This project is made possible by a grant from The South Carolina Office of Rural Health.
