Q: Does high school marching band conflict with academics?

A: No - research shows that it ENHANCES academics! Also marching band meets after school to rehearse and  typically outside or the school day to perform. 

Q: Do I have to audition to join the Marching Band?

A: The answer depends on what section of the band you are going to be joining!  If you play a woodwind or brass instrument, there is no audition to join! Ms. Huff may want to hear you play a bit so that you can be placed on the correct part (if you section has split parts, like clarinets or trumpets).  If you play a percussion instrument, there is a "placement" audition  the week before band camp to determine what instrument you will play.  Every percussionist will play something - be it in the field or sideline percussion sections - and the percussion staff works very hard to place students on instruments which will give the overall group the best chance at success. 

Q: I am interested in taking part in other activities where there may be conflicts; can I still be in the band?

A:  . It will still be challenging for someone doing a fall sport (cross country, football, etc.) to be a performing member because of the July/August Band Camp time commitment.  If you play a fall sport, or are torn between joining the band or a sport team, please email me and lets talk about it.  I can make a great case for joining band...since there are no substitutes in band, everyone gets to play 100% of the time and contribute to the overall success of the group 100% of the time.  I can't think of a sports coach who can honestly say the same thing.

Q: I feel like I can barely play my instrument while sitting down…how in the world am I supposed to do that marching band stuff?

A: Great question! My response to this is always “you’ve got to try it.”  Our success rate with students who try is holding steady at nearly 100%. By being brave and believing in yourself, you will achieve whatever it is that you set out to do. You’ll be amazed at what kind of person is inside of you!

Q: How will Marching Band work in my regular school schedule?

A: Since the Marching Band practices during it's scheduled class time and after school, there really is no conflict with your regular school schedule.  Of course, like with being involved in any extracurricular activity you have to stay on top of your classwork and keep your grades high!  This shouldn't be a problem though, because you will be hanging out with some of the smartest kids in the school you have instant access to lots of tutors, help, and motivation!

Q: Do I receive academic credit for being in the marching band?

A: All high school  students who participate in marching band will sign up for the marching band class to receive credit. This will be reflected on schoology as well as infinite campus. Students will receive grades and assignments based on after school rehearsal and performances. This will not impact students' daily schedules.

Q: I have a REALLY great question but I can’t seem to find it on this page…what should I do?!?!?

P: ¿La banda de música de la preparatoria entra en conflicto con el aprendizaje?

R: No. ¡Las investigaciones demuestran que MEJORA el aprendizaje! Además, la banda se reúne después de clases para ensayar y, por lo general, fuera del horario escolar para actuar.

P: ¿Tengo que hacer una audición para unirme a la banda?

R: ¡La respuesta depende de la sección de la banda a la que te unas! Si tocas un instrumento de viento-madera o metal, ¡no hay audición! La Sra. Huff podría querer escucharte tocar un poco para que te asignen la parte correcta (si tu sección tiene partes divididas, como clarinetes o trompetas). Si tocas un instrumento de percusión, hay una audición de "asignación" la semana anterior al campamento de banda para determinar qué instrumento tocarás. Cada percusionista tocará algo, ya sea en las secciones de percusión de campo o en las secundarias, y el equipo de percusión se esfuerza mucho para asignar a los estudiantes a los instrumentos que les darán a todos las mejores posibilidades de éxito.

P: Me interesa participar en otras actividades donde pueda haber conflictos; ¿puedo seguir en la banda?

R: Seguirá siendo difícil para alguien que practique un deporte de otoño (campo traviesa, fútbol americano, etc.) ser miembro activo debido al compromiso de tiempo del Campamento de Banda de julio/agosto. Si practicas un deporte de otoño o estás indeciso entre unirte a la banda o a un equipo deportivo, por favor, escríbeme y hablemos. Puedo defender muy bien tu idea de unirte a la banda... como no hay suplentes, todos tocan el 100% del tiempo y contribuyen al éxito general del grupo al 100%. No se me ocurre ningún entrenador deportivo que pueda decir lo mismo con sinceridad.

P: Siento que apenas puedo tocar mi instrumento sentado... ¿cómo se supone que voy a hacer esas cosas de banda de música?

R: ¡Buena pregunta! Mi respuesta siempre es: "Tienes que intentarlo". Nuestra tasa de éxito con los estudiantes que lo intentan se mantiene estable en casi el 100%. Siendo valiente y creyendo en ti mismo, lograrás todo lo que te propongas. ¡Te sorprenderá la clase de persona que llevas dentro!

P: ¿Cómo funcionará la Banda de Música en mi horario escolar regular?

R: Dado que la Banda de Música practica durante su horario de clases y después de clases, no hay conflicto con tu horario escolar regular. Claro que, al igual que con cualquier actividad extracurricular, ¡debes estar al día con tus tareas y obtener buenas calificaciones! Esto no debería ser un problema, ya que estarás con algunos de los estudiantes más inteligentes de la escuela y tendrás acceso instantáneo a muchos tutores, ayuda y motivación.

P: ¿Recibo créditos académicos por estar en la banda de música?

R: Todos los estudiantes de preparatoria que participan en la banda de música se inscribirán en la clase para recibir créditos. Esto se reflejará en Schoology y en Infinite Campus. Los estudiantes recibirán calificaciones y tareas basadas en los ensayos y presentaciones después de clases. Esto no afectará sus horarios diarios.

P: Tengo una pregunta MUY buena, pero no la encuentro en esta página... ¿Qué debo hacer?
