Inspirational Quote of the Day: “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious.”– Stephen Hawking

Objective: 7.2 Lesson 2- How do heaters get warm without a flame?

Standards:

MS-PS1-6:

Undertake a design project to construct, test, and modify a device that either releases or absorbs thermal energy by chemical processes.

MS-ETS1-2:

Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

MS-ETS1-3:

Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.

MS-ETS1-4:

Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.

Warm-Up: Take 5 Warm-up

To Do List: 4. Carry out the hand warmer investigation in small groups,

5 Have a building understandings discussion about our results

6. Have a building understandings discussion about our results

7. Navigation Consider based on this lesson's work what we should investigate next time.- We want to test different chemical reactions to determine if any of them cause an increase in temperature for use in our homemade flameless heater designs. Once we identify a reaction with which to move forward, we will investigate energy transfer from that system to the food system using an Energy Transfer Model.

Energy Expo- Friday January 12

Expo information- 8:30-9:45 BSS Cafeteria

It is set up with 6 stations that students will rotate through in groups of 17-18 students. [Go to Schoology for Groups] Graded worksheets will be provided for students to complete.

Station A- What is Electricity? How do we use energy in our school?

Station B- How do we make electricity? What are the impacts of fossil fuel use on our environment?

Stations C-F How do we reduce air pollution from our energy use?

C) Conserve- Use less

D) Go Energy Efficient

E) Use Cleaner fuels:

i. Solar

ii. Wind

iii. Electric Cars

iv. Nuclear Energy

F ) The future: Hydrogen, wave energy, hydrogen fuel cells, carbon capture.
