See the Multi Year Growth rates (below)- Explanation of Start Number and End Number - The End Number is the estimated number of seed clams to be planted. It is always lower than the estimated Start Number (estimated number purchased). The yield is lower because the count is based on volume. Seed clams are all about the same size when received (2 mm to 3 mm) but after weeks of growth, tiny runts (clams not growing at the normal rate) are in the range of 3mm to 6 mm when the rest are reaching a range between 15 to 18 mm in some years and 28 to 26 mm in other years. This 300% to 900% size variation skews the calculations based on volume. Hence, the average size used with the volume to calculate the number of clams uses the most common larger size. The difference between Start and End is called cull. RCTB records End Number which is the number that can be more accurately calculated. A year with a very low cull indicates fewer runts.
