Literacy
The kindergarten year is filled with a variety of experiences that will excite and engage your child in a wide range of activities that promote a love of literature. Each day will include activities for phonemic awareness, working with letters and words, and practicing letter formation. Also, students will have opportunities to listen to stories read aloud, join in shared reading and be given time to read independently. Additionally, children are encouraged to put their own thoughts and story ideas on paper using pictures, letters and words. A workshop management model allows for differentiation so that all students learn and grow regardless of developmental starting points.
Math
During daily math lessons students will be working with a variety of hands on materials and manipulatives in addition to a math book as part of the Ready Mathematics Program. These tools, along with math discussions with peers will help guide students to a greater number sense and understanding of math concepts. Students will be encouraged to share their thinking as they solve problems. The curriculum covers content in the areas of counting/cardinality, operations/algebraic thinking, measurement and data, as well as geometry.
Social Studies
SEL
Kindergarteners will spend time learning to navigate school and all of the different places and people that make up the school community. This leads to an understanding of teamwork and the child's role in that effort. Finally we visit concepts of past, present and future to assist in choice making. This will be combined with lessons that help young learners begin to recognize and manage a variety of feelings, and develop social awareness and relationship skills that lead to responsible decision making.
Science
Kindergarteners are naturally curious and filled with wonder and have so many questions about the world around them. The science curriculum is inquiry based and encourages children to observe, notice and ask questions through investigations. Topics will cover physical, life, and earth sciences in addition to a strong focus on engineering/design. Students will learn about trees, weather, materials and motion along with structures of animals over the course of the year. It is always exciting to see a young child's science notebook filled with discoveries.
