A child or young person is said to have additional support needs (ASN) if they need more - or different support - to what is universally provided in educational establishments to children or young people of the same age.
Many circumstances may mean that a child or young person needs additional support for learning:
Learning environment
Family circumstances
Disability or health
Social or emotional factors
Additional Support Needs are often identified early on in a young person's life and information of these needs are shared through our transition process from P7 to S1 to ensure all supports are in place for starting High School. Sometimes, however, needs are identified later and our Pupil Support staff are on hand to ensure the right supports are in place.
Below are a few examples of the support available at Renfrew High School.
In Class Supports:
While all young people have support needs, those with confirmed/diagnosed ASNs will have a plan that is shared with their teachers. This highlights the needs of the young person, their relevant strengths, interests/hobbies, suggested strategies to help them achieve their targets and views of the young person themselves. This is used by class teachers to inform their practice in how best to support a young person with Additional support Needs in their class.
Department Level Supports:
Departments within Renfrew High School have their own supports which are tailored to their specific subjects. In particular, English and Mathematics work closely with our Transition Teachers to provide targeted interventions for young people who may need some additional support with aspects of learning in these subject areas.
Pupil Support Teachers:
Each young person in the school will be assigned to a House which is led by a different Principal Teacher of Pupil Support. This is their key person for throughout their time at Renfrew High School. For young people with Additional Support Needs, their Pupil Support Teacher will be particularly important in ensuring the receive the most appropriate supports.
Assessment Arrangements:
Young people with confirmed/diagnosed Additional Support Needs may be entitled to certain Assessment Arrangements as per SQA Guidelines. More information on Assessment Arrangements can be found here: www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/103011.html
Pupil Support Teachers will coordinate this support alongside the school's SQA Coordinator.
Nevis Base/Nurture Base:
The Nevis and Nurture Bases are safe spaces in the school and are led by our Inclusion Support Assistant and Key Worker. These spaces are used to support young people in a number of different ways and are extremely flexible and diverse in their use.
Exchange Counselling Service:
All of our young people can access free and discreet counselling through The Exchange. The experienced team have supported many young people to find what they need to be happy and resilient. Young people can be referred by their Pupil Support teacher with their consent or can self refer using the link on the Ren10 website.
Transition:
Our transition teachers work between our cluster primary schools of Arkleston, Kirklandneuk and Newmains Primaries. For young people with Additional Support Needs, the Transition Teachers will work closely with them at the end of their Primary School journey to ensure a smooth transition into Secondary School where they will continue to support them.
Partner Agencies:
In order to ensure that our young people have access to the highest quality supports, we work closely with numerous partner agencies including, but not limited to: Bernardos, Social Work, Police Scotland, Exchange Counselling, Home Link, SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health), I Am Me Scotland, YMCA, Renfrewshire Toy Bank etc
