In Grade 6, students have the opportunity to experience a variety of options throughout the year. Students in grade 6 are required to take Math, Science, English Language Arts and Literature, Social Studies, Physical Education (year long), Wellness (one term). Students in the Sportfit Academy, will receive a grade for Wellness and PE as a part of that course.
When considering which options you would like to take, please know that we do our best to accommodate student requests, but courses are only offered if there is enough student interest to fill them. When you make your requests, you will be asked to select "back up" options. In the event your first choices don't fit in your timetable, or there was not enough interest for them to be offered, the computer will use the back ups to place you appropriately. Even with these considerations, you may be placed in an option you did not select due to course availability and scheduling.
During course selection, students selecting Band OR French, will choose 5 additional courses. Students choosing both Band AND French, will choose 2 additional options. Students in Academy, but not Band or French, will choose 6 options. Academy students in Band OR French will choose three options. Academy students are not able to take both Band AND French. Students not taking Band, French or Academy, will choose 8 options.
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of Art and Design. Students will learn the basic elements of art through a variety of projects and mediums. Projects may include cartooning, watercolor, clay sculpture, etc.
Instrumental Music allows students (in conjunction with the teacher and their parents) to select an instrument which is best suited to them. Instruments are available for purchase, rent, or rent-to-own agreements. Band 6 requires home practice and is a full year option. Band 6 is a pre-requisite for Band 7 and 8.
Students will work with a variety of programs that will allow them to enhance their skills in using computers. Some topics of study may include: ethics and safety, keyboarding, web page design, coding.
This course is designed to acquaint students with basic dramatic form and style. This is a cooperative course intended to build a sense of community among students to provide a safe, supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable taking risks and trying new skills.
Fashions 6 is an introduction to sewing. Students will learn basic sewing safety, vocabulary and procedures. Students will have the opportunity to produce small fabric items such as wheat bags, stuffed animals or drawstring bags.
This course allows students to study the art of film while examining its history, theory, meaning as a medium.
Foods 6 introduces students to the basic skills and procedures in the kitchen. Students will learn safety in using knives, blenders, stoves, overns and more. This course is very hands on and students will get to make simple snacks to enjoy.
French 6 reviews many of the concepts that students have learned in elementary French. French 6 is a full year course and is a pre-requisite for French 7 and 8.
This course encourages students to enhance critical thinking and reasoning by playing various games and using different strategies to find success.
Students will explore historical and contemporary perspectives of First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultures. Students may participate in a variety of cultural activities such as smudging and powwows. This course is open to all students.
Leadership 6 is designed to teach students what it means to LEAD as a Wildcat, and as a future leader in the community. Students will experience a variety of opportunities to take the lead and positively impact the school.
This course allows students to explore their creativity through photography and photo editing.
Students will participate in a range of recreational activities, both inside and outside on the school grounds. Activities may include board games, activities using our playground, plastic axe throwing, foosball, etc.
This course introduces students to working with tools, following plans, measuring and laying out materials, and build projects. Students will have the opportunity to work with acrylic, plastics and wood.
