These drama courses offer students the opportunity to enrich themselves artistically and develop technical skills and discipline. This sequence of courses will develop performance and technical skills by exposing students to theatrical literature, theatrical history, playwriting, scene-building, technical theatre, movement, speech, improvisation, acting and directing. There are many opportunities for both in-class and public performances. Extracurricular commitments are required at every grade level.
Drama 9 builds the basis of dramatic practice and fosters a love of play and performance. Group performance projects, theatre history, and devised theatre make up the majority of the assesments.
Drama 10 elaborates on the principles of drama 9 and allows students to perform monologues, scenes, as well as devised work. The focus of this course is on ensemble collaboration, as well as an introduction to the technical elements of theatre.
Drama 20/30 is offered as a combined course with the goal of offering students the chance to put together a "capstone project". In first semester, that usually entails some form of full-length play put on entirely by students in the course; with 30 level students directing, and 20 level students performing. In second semester, our class participates in the AHSDFA festival and showcases a collection of student-lead one act plays at the zone festival.
