About Mme Groves
This is my eighth year at École Barrie Wilson Elementary School, and my fifteenth year teaching elementary school French Immersion.
During this time, I have taught grades 1 through 7, as a classroom teacher, District Learning Recovery Teacher, Learning Assistance Teacher, and Learning Intervention Teacher. All the while, I have delighted in my students and in continuously learning and growing right alongside them!
This year, I will have the great pleasure of teaching Grade One French Immersion, relishing the opportunity to help students build many foundational understandings and skills.
As for a quick autobiographical sketch, some highlights include:
growing up in Vancouver
studying in Montreal, Paris (France) , Kobe (Japan) , Oxford (England)
travelling extensively (Europe, Africa, the Arab Gulf and Asia)
playing cello and violin (I think my musical training made it easier to learn languages!)
learning four languages (French, English, Italian and Japanese)
devouring books (brain research, natural sciences, art history, poetry, psychology, and modern literature)
obtaining three degrees:
Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education with Distinction from University of Alberta;
Bachelor of Jurisprudence from University of Oxford; and
Bachelor of Arts with Great Distinction from McGill University with a Major in History and a Minor in East Asian Languages and Literature
obtaining certification as a DELF assessor (for levels A1 through B2) (DELF stands for the Diplôme d'études en langue française; it is awarded by the Ministry of Education in France to prove the French-language skills of non-French candidates)
obtaining certification as a Level B assessor (Level B assessments are standarized one on one tests designed to help identify a student's current areas of strengths and weaknesses in academic performance)
becoming a mother to two wonderful sons, Andrew and Michael, now aged 25 and 22 respectively.
The only other thing you really need to know about me is that I am passionate about learning … and I LOVE TEACHING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FRENCH IMMERSION!
I am thrilled to be part of École Barrie Wilson Elementary School where there is such a positive, progressive learning community. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow with my students and colleagues at École Barrie Wilson Elementary School!
