Essential to creating self-directed learners is giving students choices—based on their readiness, learning style, and interests—around when, where, and how to access and demonstrate their learning of the proficiencies. Options can be as varied as online learning to dual enrollment opportunities at local colleges. Along with the federal Department of Education and the Vermont Agency of Education, we support Open Educational Resources (OERs)—vetted, online materials created for and by teachers to meet students where they are in their learning and appeal to their interests and learning styles. Some of your children’s teachers might provide access to these through learning ‘menus’ or ‘playlists’ that contain multiple resources for accessing and practicing learning.
