English Language Arts (ELA)


Our English Language Arts curriculum in class will consist of learning the stuctures of writing and reading. We will be focusing on grade level reading and writing concepts as well as close reading of complex texts for the students. They will learn the nine parts of speech as well as grade six spelling and vocabulary words. Our students will be challenged and encouraged to read many books this school year. Our curriculum is aligned with the Common Core Standards for ELA: reading and writing. Students will learn to use strategies for comprehension and fluency. The three types of writing that are required for the Common Core for grade 6 will be: Narrative, Argument/Opinion, and Informative/Explanatory.

Parts of Speech-nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, articles, interjections, and prepositions.

Vocabulary from-ELA Common Core Books, Social Studies curriculum, Science curriculum, Interactive Read Aloud Common Core Books.

Reading Workshop-Whole Group Book/Student Centered Partners.

Spelling-students will be organized into leveled groups.
