Dear Families,
We had fun doing St. Patrick's Day themed activities throughout the day. In language arts, we kicked off the day with the book "How to Catch a Leprechaun," and then wrote imaginative narrative stories about finding a pot of gold. In math, we reviewed multiplication with puzzles and pixel art, and made a virtual leprechaun trap. In art, we made sculptures with our art docent and visited our kindergarten buddies to help them with a spring bunny craft. During science, we learned about four leaf clovers, gold, and how rainbows are made. We ended our day with a scavenger hunt and Fun Friday!

Flat Stanley Project
Thank you for sending in the addressed envelopes for our Flat Stanley project! At the latest, I will need remaining addressed envelopes returned by Tuesday, as we will be packing the envelopes in class and mailing them out by Thursday.
The following items will be mailed to your recipient: Flat Stanley, personal letter from your child, letter with directions from 3rd grade teachers, paper journal, reminder notes, and a pre-addressed envelope for them to mail back to the school.
Your recipient will be keeping Flat Stanley for 2 weeks once they receive him, and attach postage to mail Flat Stanley and any additional items back in the envelope (such as photos and the journal) to school.
As the mail begins to return to school, we will share about them in class to learn about different parts of the world. Once we are done sharing items in class, your child will take home their items. Note: There have been times in the past when the Flat Stanley package has gotten lost in the mail on the way back to school, so we do mention this possibility beforehand in case there is disappointment if an envelope doesn't return to school. Fingers crossed for Flat Stanley's safe return!
Day of Awesome - 3/21

3rd grade time = 10:30 - 11:30 (lunch will be afterwards instead of at 11:10)

Dear Families,
We had such a fun time at our field trip to Bernhard Museum today! Please see below for information about the following: Flat Stanley Project and Tests/Quizzes + Math Test next week.
Flat Stanley Project
Next week all 3rd grade classes will be reading the book Flat Stanley, and participating in the Flat Stanley Project. Students will take home a letter with information at the beginning of the week.
Flat Stanley is about a boy that gets flattened by a bulletin board but is fine. He can do many things being flat. One of them is the ability to be mailed in an envelope and go on vacation! Ever since this book was written years ago, students have been sending paper Flat Stanleys all over the world.
Next week after your child brings home the Flat Stanley information letter, please talk with your child about a family member or friend that would be willing to participate in the project. This person should live in a different city, state, or even a different country. They would show Stanley around their city and daily lives, take photos, write a journal from his perspective, and mail the items back to us after a couple weeks. We will learn about these places around the world through the students' Flat Stanley journeys.
Once you have chosen a person, you may want to give them a call or send a message to ask if they'll have time to participate in the above tasks. All you need to do is write their address on the white envelope that I will send home next week, and return the addressed envelope back to school by Friday 3/15. In class, we will pack your child's Flat Stanley, a letter from your child, a trip journal, and mail him from school to your recipient before spring break.
You can learn more about the Flat Stanley project or books below:

A composite of this survey will be shared with the School Site Council, but individual responses will be kept confidential. Please complete this survey-LINK HERE
Author Visit
Diamond Creek is excited to welcome local author Jesse Bennett to our school on Friday, March 1st. Jesse's ideas for her books came from time spent with her own children. She wanted to share the sweet simple values of kindness, love, gratitude, and being exactly who you are, unapologetically. She wanted her kids to be able to hold something special she created for them, that can be shared with other families and brought into their homes, too. HERE is a flyer about her upcoming visit. If your child would like to get a book signed please purchase it ahead of time on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or wherever else you can find her books!

Bernhard Character Identity - due Monday, 2/26
The Bernhard Museum is a Living History field trip. The students will be doing activities that kids would have done in the late 1800s- cooking, woodworking, washing clothes, crafts, etc. To make the trip as authentic as possible, the students will not be kids of 2024. Each student will develop a character to assume an 1800s identity while on the field trip. We will need some information to help your child create their identity.
I sent home a paper today to write family information (back of bright blue page):
Each child will choose an old-fashioned name from grandparents, great-grandparents, great aunts/uncles to be on the day of the field trip. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) may choose an old-fashioned occupation from the 1800s (see list HERE). What country did your family/ancestors originally come from BEFORE arriving to the United States of America? Where would your child like to land in the USA from their home country? How did they get to California or Auburn? (wagon, horse, train, ship, etc)
**Some to a lot of this information can be made up unless you know how your family/ancestors arrived to the United States or to California.
**We have discussed all of these topics in class. Your child should understand the assignment.
This information on this planning sheet will be used in class to write a historical fiction story of their journey to Auburn, California. We will write our "autobiographies" in class before the field trip.
Thank you for your help in getting the information to your child! It will make the field trip more authentic if it is based on real information from your family history.

Bernhard Information
Upcoming
At the end of next week, students will be taking home information related to our current social studies unit on pioneers, and in preparation for our March 8th field trip to the Bernhard Museum.
Forms
We have already collected the donations for this field trip, so next week students will take home the field trip form and chaperone form.
Costume/Identity
This is an immersive field trip where students will be dressed in costume like pioneers, and take on the identity of a character from the 1800s.
3rd grade teachers will be sending home resources & descriptions for you and your child to start planning for their costume
Later students will take home a planning page to help them have a conversation with you at home to learn more about their family ancestry, and to create a pioneer character from the 1800s.
We will be using the planning page to write about their character in class in the form of historical fiction, and use the character as their "Bernhard identity" when we go on the field trip.

Some students said they needed another copy, so I sent extra copies home with certain students today just in case. As a precaution, I am also linking the directions HERE.
The written report (typed or handwritten), quilt square (using paper provided), and activity (see examples in directions) are due on Friday, 12/8. (**If the activity item they are sharing is valuable, such as a keepsake ornament, then let me know and they can instead bring it on the day of their presentation.)

There are 2 primary goals of the WATCHD.O.G.S. program:
To provide positive male (or adult) role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
We believe that all of us want the same things for our kids and these values unite us. This program serves to bring communities closer together based on these values-based goals. We are also looking for the use of tents on each of these days. Tents will need to be set up BY THE OWNER in the quad of the school between 7-7:30 and taken down between 2:15-3:00 the same day. The tents will be used by the kids. Please fill out THIS form if you are able to donate the use of your tent for the day(s).
Thank you so much for your support! Let’s ROCK THIS SCHOOL!
Updated Roster + Room Parent
See email for updated class roster for parent contact information
Our Room Parent this year is Melissa McMahan! Melissa will be contacting you throughout the year for school or classroom related events/celebrations.
Please make sure that you save Melissa's contact information to make sure her communication does not end up in your Junk folder. Melissa_62478@yahoo.com
Melissa sent a Walk-a-thon email earlier this week, and we want to make sure you have the information. Thank you!
iReady Reports
Today students took home their beginning-of-year iReady Diagnostic reports for Reading and Math
This information is not used for report cards, but rather as a progress monitoring tool throughout the year and to help determine math or reading groups.
Students completed this diagnostic within the first few weeks of school, or some may have finished it earlier this month.
The program delivers personalized reading instruction, and each child receives lessons to help build their knowledge and skills in specific areas based on their diagnostic.
Although we work on these iReady lessons in class, students are also encouraged to use iReady at home as needed for extra practice, review, or to access the learning games.

Class Roster
Please refer to this week's Friday email for the copy of our class parent roster, if you need to contact our classroom families throughout the school year.
If you did not fill out the class roster permission at the beginning of the year and would like your information included on the roster, please fill it out HERE and I will update the roster. Thank you!
iReady Reports
Next week your child will be taking home their beginning of year iReady Reading and Math reports.
We use the information to help with grouping students for leveled reading strategy or math groups, track progress and growth throughout the year, and to assign personalized instruction.
Students may work on their iReady Reading lessons at home as extra practice by logging into Clever - iReady. We also work on iReady Reading lessons during reading workshop.
Tests/Quizzes
This week we completed a Practice Reading Comprehension Test together
All 3rd grade classes use the digital Benchmark reading tests
Our first reading test is not graded for report cards, since they completed it with me in class. If they followed directions and listened carefully, they should have all the answers correct since the goal was to help them learn the program functions and practice the types of questions that they will see on future tests.
Some students forgot to submit the digital test to me, but if your child turned it in, then you should be able to view their practice test using the following steps:
Go to Clever (accessed through the district website under student resources)
Log in using their Clever badge, OR 6-digit student number @rcsdkids.us and birthdate MM/DD/YY
Reading: Select Benchmark
Go to My Assignments
Click on the test
Under the heading "open," click on the book icon
It will show you the passage, questions, student responses, and correct answers.
Their score will be shown at the top, as a fraction of points correct over the total possible.

At the beginning of 3rd grade, we preview each test or quiz together and I read the questions and directions aloud during the preview. Gradually, they will be responsible for this themselves.

Volunteers
Thank you for those who filled in the volunteer survey to help in our classroom this year! I will be contacting volunteers next week to plan a schedule.

Dear Families,
It was nice to meet you at Back to School Night this week! Thank you so much for donating school supplies for our students to share and use throughout the year.
We had a nice first week together getting to know one another and setting the foundation for our 3rd grade year.
Please see below for information about the following: Communication Folder, "About Me in 3" Sharing, Ohana Photo, Homework, Scholastic Book Order, and Form Links.
Enjoy your weekend!
Communication Folder
Today students took home their Communication Folder, which is also used as their homework folder. They should bring their folder to school each day and save it in their backpack. Please check their folders each day for homework or forms from the school.
Today their folder included the following: Scholastic Book Club brochure, Roseville Public Library card, and "About Me in 3" Sharing Activity directions.
In our class, the students pack their folders themselves, so in class they are learning how to be responsible with filling their folders, bringing information home, and returning items back to me as needed.
"About Me in 3" Sharing
Week of 8/14-8/18
Please refer to the pink "Sharing Activity" directions in their folder. They can bring their 3 items anytime next week, and when they bring them I will give them time to share in class to continue getting to know one another. Their items should be able to fit safely either in their backpack or in a small separate bag, as they will keep their items in their bag and at their desk area until sharing time.
Ohana (Family) Photo
Week of 8/21-8/25
To go with our "3rd Grade Ohana" class theme, please either email or send in a copy of a family photo for your child to share. We keep the photos in class for awhile, and then we will return it back usually at the end of the first trimester.
For children with multiple families or homes, they are welcome to bring in more than one photo to share
Thank you for helping us to start off the year with these community building activities!
Homework
Next week Tuesday will be the first day of homework
Guidelines for homework
Mondays-Thursdays; no homework on Fridays, unless we are doing a class project
Math homework = 1 double sided math page (children should attempt all problems, including Stretch Your Thinking)
Reading homework = read 20 minutes from a book of their choice
Time: Homework is estimated to be approximately 40-45 minutes. If your child takes much longer than this timeframe, it is best to stop and not overload them with hours of homework so that they can have a break and enjoy family and extracurricular activities.
Challenges: If for some reason they are unable to complete the homework due to challenges with the assignment or personal schedules at home, please let me know in an email or note on their homework. I will then have them keep the assignment to continue working on at home. I can also work with you to have your child complete a modified version (such as only doing evens/odds or selecting certain problems to do). We also continue to review in class.
See the Learning Resources tab in the menu above (or class links) for math homework resources
