“Treat your instrument like a little baby!”

(Even if it’s as big as a bear!)

When in the case or travelling:

• The instrument is still fragile and CAN be broken while still in the case.

• Keep the instrument and case at room temperature. Think Goldilocks temperature. It needs to be “just right.” SOOOO…

• Don’t leave it in the sun or on a heating vent.

• Don’t leave it in the cold car or on an unheated porch.

Create a place at home to practice:

• Have a safe place to open the case, and a place to set your book or music (dresser drawers can work).

• Use rest position, guitar position, and playing position to keep the instrument safe.

• No one else in your house is allowed to touch your instrument without your permission.

The Bow

• “We tighten the bow to get ready to play, we loosen the bow when we put it away.”

• Bows eat rosin. Feed it 5 lines of rosin 1 or 2 times a week.

• Keep the bow hair clean by rosining it, and remember, never touch the bow hair.

The Instrument

• Wash and dry your hands before you play.

• Never leave your instrument alone. (Babies get scared if you leave them alone!)

• Tune the instrument only if you’ve been taught how.

• Clean dust and rosin off of the strings and instrument every time you finish playing. Only use a soft cloth (an old section of clean t-shrit works great).

String instruments are very fragile. Things can break by accident. Bring it to Mr. Fetter if:

• The pegs slip or come out.

• The sound post comes out.

• The strings are loose.

• Never make any repairs yourself. Many pieces are pressure fit and not glued.

• Never use any kind of cleaners on the instrument or bow. Only a soft cloth.

Violins and Violas

• Before opening the case, set it on something safe and stable. Little bumps down, big bump up. Make sure the case won’t tip or fall.

• When putting it away, make sure the bow is in place and secured.

• Shoulder rests (sponges) should be removed and placed on top of the scroll and/or rosin pocket. Rubber bands can be left on.

• When closing the case, go slowly and never press to get the case closed. Make sure all latches are closed.

Cellos and Basses

• Bow out first when opening the case!

• Unzip and gently free the case of the body of the instrument.

• Lift the case off and set the instrument down gently on it’s A string side.

• Extend the end pin and tighten it securely.

• End pins should only be out when you’re playing. End pin in to win! (People trip over them all the time)

• When putting it away, place the case over scroll (like a hoodie) and then fit around body of instrument. Music pocket on the back, bow pocket on the front.

• If the instrument is too heavy, set it down on the high string side.

Take care of your baby and it will sing for you!

• Nadie más en su casa puede tocar su instrumento sin su permiso.

El arco

• Apretamos el arco para prepararnos para jugar, aflojamos el arco cuando lo guardamos".

• Los arcos comen colofonia. Aliméntalo con 5 líneas de colofonia 1 o 2 veces por semana.

• Mantenga el pelo del arco limpio colocándolo y recuerde, nunca toque el pelo del arco.

El instrumento

• Lávate y sécate las manos antes de jugar.

• Nunca deje su instrumento solo. (¡Los bebés se asustan si los dejas solos!)

• Afina el instrumento solo si te han enseñado cómo.

• Limpie el polvo y la colofonia de las cuerdas y el instrumento cada vez que termine de tocar. Solo use un paño suave (una sección vieja de una camisa limpia funciona muy bien).

Los instrumentos de cuerda son muy frágiles. Las cosas pueden romperse por accidente. Llévelo al Sr. Fetter si:

• Las clavijas se resbalan o salen.

• Se desafina el sonido.

• Las cuerdas están sueltas.

• Nunca haga reparaciones usted mismo. Muchas piezas se ajustan a presión y no están pegadas.

• Nunca use ningún tipo de limpiadores en el instrumento o el arco. Solo un paño suave.

Violines y Violas

• Antes de abrir la caja, colóquela en algo seguro y estable. Pequeñas curvas hacia abajo, grandes curvas hacia arriba. Asegúrese de que el estuche no se vuelque ni se caiga.

• Al guardarlo, asegúrese de que el arco esté en su lugar y asegurado.

• Los reposabrazos (esponjas) deben retirarse y colocarse sobre el pergamino y / o bolsillo de colofonia. Se pueden dejar bandas de goma.

• Al cerrar el caso, vaya despacio y nunca presione para cerrar el caso. Asegúrese de que todos los pestillos estén cerrados.

Violoncelos y Bajos

• ¡Inclínate primero al abrir el estuche!

• Descomprima y libere suavemente la carcasa del cuerpo del instrumento.

• Levante la caja y coloque el instrumento suavemente sobre el lado A de la cuerda.

• Extienda el pasador final y apriételo firmemente.

• Los pines finales solo deberían estar fuera cuando estás jugando. Fin pin in para ganar! (La gente tropieza con ellos todo el tiempo)

• Al guardarlo, coloque el estuche sobre el pergamino (como una sudadera con capucha) y luego ajuste alrededor del cuerpo del instrumento. Bolsillo para música en la parte posterior, bolsillo con lazo en la parte delantera.

• Si el instrumento es demasiado pesado, colóquelo en el lado de la cuerda alta.
