To promote academic integrity and reduce confusion, we must move beyond detection and focus on clarity. Use these strategies to set "rules of the road" that help students become responsible digital citizens.
Don't leave students guessing. Be explicit about your expectations from day one.
Draft Supportive Classroom Policies: Use an AI tool (like Gemini) to help you draft clear statements for your syllabus or welcome letter outlining general AI policies.
Co-create a "Classroom AI Agreement" and build student buy-in by discussing it with your students. Talk about when AI is helpful versus harmful and define your shared values together.
For every assignment, explicitly state the permitted level of AI usage. This eliminates confusion and establishes a shared, standard language within your classroom.
The "RCSD Scale" Strategy: Include the specific, acceptable AI level directly in your assignment headers and rubrics so students know exactly where the boundaries lie.
Clarify Assignment Expectations: Draft explicit statements regarding acceptable AI use for specific tasks. Paste these guidelines directly into your lesson plans for your own reference, and ensure they are clearly visible to students.
Teach Proper Citation: Treat generative AI like any other source. Require students to cite when and how they used AI tools in their work.
Grades Kâ2 (Habit Building): Prioritize "Good Digital Citizen" habits over the formal scale. Use teacher-led modeling to emphasize honesty about when the computer helps and carefulness when checking for mistakes.
Grades 3â5 (Smarth Tool Check): Introduce the scale to facilitate conversations about being "Smart" with AI. Encourage students to reflect on the purpose of the tool by asking: "Am I using AI to support my thinking, or letting it do all the work?"
Grades 6-8 (Work Guide): Use the scale to establish clear boundaries for every assignment. Teachers set specific AI levels for tasks, and students begin to justify their usage by explaining how the tool helped them meet the learning goal.
Grades 9â12 (Formal Contract): Implement the scale as a formal agreement for academic integrity. Include the required AI level in all assignment headers and rubrics, holding students fully accountable for the transparency and integrity of their AI-human collaboration.
