Anne Matela
Anne Marie Matela believes that the true role of an educator is to guide and facilitate student-driven exploration—a core principle behind nature-based education. Drawing from a lifelong connection to the natural world, Anne Marie has three decades in education with experience as a classroom teacher, service coordinator, student and family advocate, and community resource provider.
Having supported the Nature-Based Learning Program at Anna Murray Douglass Academy, School #12 since its inception, Anne Marie has played a key role in integrating outdoor education into daily academic life by designing and leading nature-based lessons tailored to be developmentally accessible for students of all ages and abilities. Anne Marie has also mentored colleagues and led professional development to build staff capacity for outdoor instruction. Rooted in a personal commitment to environmental guardianship, Anne Marie aims to deepen the impact of the NBL program at School #12.

Kyra Stephenson
Kyra Stephenson is no longer employed at AMDA12, but her legacy and impact lives on throughout each scholar and teacher she has worked with. Without her dedication to our school, NBL would not be alive and thriving today. We thank her for her determination to provide every scholar with outdoor learning and experiences, which directly improved the Social & Emotional and academic needs of our scholars. Kyra will always be a part of the AMDA12 family and we anticipate working together with her in her new position.

Kyra Stephenson is a seasoned educator and New York State Master Teacher Emeritus with over two decades of experience. Kyra was the Nature-Based Learning Coach at Anna Murray-Douglass Academy School #12 within the Rochester City School District, where she successfully integrated a comprehensive nature-based learning program into a public school. She is passionate about fostering a deep connection between people and the natural world, particularly in helping youth connect with nature.
She is also the founder of Nature Mind Solutions LLC, a consulting company that helps educators integrate nature-based learning into their teaching practices to promote holistic wellness, academic growth, and community building. Through personalized support, coaching, and resources, her company empowers schools to create sustainable and inclusive learning environments that connect students with nature.
Her commitment to environmental education has earned her recognition, including the distinguished Seneca Park Zoo Environmental Innovation Award. She is also a key member of Rochester's Nature Everywhere Vision Lab Team, contributing to the Children and Outdoor Bill of Rights initiative under the Children and Nature Network. Beyond her professional achievements, Kyra finds joy in her role as a spouse and parent to three children, cherishing moments immersed in nature and fueling her commitment to environmental stewardship and holistic education.
