Saturn's origin and history goes way back in time. Lets learn more about this wonderful, historic planet! First, let's talk about its name. Saturn was the Greek name for Cronus, the king of titans in Greek mythology. In roman mythology, Saturn was known as Saturnus, for the roman god. Also in roman mythology, Saturn was the father of Jupiter. Some of Saturn's nicknames are " The Ringed Planet," and, " The Ringed World." As you can see, the rings give it most of its nicknames. Saturn's symbol is very unique, and each part of the symbol has a very special meaning. The first part of the symbol is the top cross, which represents the culmination of matter. Also, it represents the function of intense focus. The second part of the symbol is the tail- like crescent, which represents receptivity. All the meanings of the symbol are based off of the roman god, Saturnus. Saturn goes way back in history, to the 1600's. In 1610, Galileo Galilei discovered Saturn and its rings through a telescope. Christiaan Huygens discovered the largest of Saturn's moons, Titan. Some other people, like Giovanni Cassini, who discovered Lapetus, Rhea, Tethys and Dione. Whew! Saturn has a lot of origins!
