Our Guidance Class:

In our class, we focus on social, emotional, and academic growth. Guidance students learn how to solve problems, work cooperatively, and practice important friendship skills. We do this in a variety of ways. Often we will read stories, play games, or sing songs that help us learn various topics.  We follow the Virginia Standards of Learning for our guidance classes which can be found here:  https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/16173/638036070378500000

Small Groups:

Occasionally students in the school will be dealing with similar problems at the same time. When this happens, I will pull students in a small group setting to provide emotional support and normalize their experience. In the past, I've held groups for students who have been having issues making friends. Teachers can also identify students who need help in a similar area and refer them to me. For example, there might be a few students in a class who are struggling with anxiety. We then work together in a small group to practice calming techniques and coping skills.

One on One Counseling:

Outside of classroom guidance, this is how I spend most of my time. I meet one on one with students to help them succeed at school academically and socially. Teachers or parents may refer their children to me at any time. Students are also encouraged to self-refer if they are feeling strong emotions. Typically, I work with a student a few times to provide brief, solution-focused counseling. Occasionally, this is not enough, and I will refer students to NRVCS or community counseling.
