WHY Math 8????

We want to explain why RCPS decided to make a change from Algebra I to Math 8 for all 8th grade students. In 2018-19 the VDOE implemented new SOLs for Mathematics. In these changes, the state made it essential for all kids to have a solid K-8th grade background in math before moving on to Algebra I. As a result, the standards became even more rigorous and there was A LOT of content from Algebra I moved down to Math 8. DIS did very well on all Math SOLs last year but Mr. Conner and I did a lot of catching up on the missing Math 8 concepts last year. The students also worked very hard to master all that was needed to be successful on the Algebra I SOL test last year. So, Radford City has brought back Math 8 to give students a more solid foundation before taking Algebra I. In our opinion the current standards for Math 8 are more Algebra I part 1 than ordinary math 8 content. We truly believe this content change is in the best interest for all students to get a solid foundation in math. Math 8 is going to be a rigorous course that will require your child to spend time each night on homework or preparing for the next day’s class.
