An Ardent Learner

We are all familiar with the saying, “Where there is a will there is a way.” Ms. Thea Louis Kamath has proved to us that this is actually possible. Despite the pandemic, Ms. Thea is quite focused with her aims and objectives. She kept herself busy with school work and prepared for the ‘Masterminds State Championship’ and appeared for the examinations held in the Month of May 2021.

She secured the Third Rank in the Math and English League, Fourth Rank in the Science League and an A+ in the Geography League at the State Level Championship in the Standard Four Category held in Mumbai. Having secured an A+ in Geography she qualifies to appear for the National Level Championship. She has been awarded with three trophies and four certificates for the same.

Everyone of us at RBK School are proud of her achievements and we wish her all the very best in her future endeavours.

How Do My Values Relate to the Values of Others?

By moral values, we mean those values, principles and beliefs on which a person’s personal and social development depends. They are the essence of our personality and affect us to make decisions, deal with people and arrange our time and energy in our social and professional life. Values vary greatly among individuals. The character of each person is shaped by the set of values he/she relishes.

It is well quoted by Ann Landers:

“It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves, that will make them successful human beings.”

Families, teachers and educators play a crucial role in building values as children and students see them as role models. Teaching moral values is very necessary for the all-round development of a person. It includes discipline, manners and etiquette, behaviour, politeness, patriotism, including love and care for each other. Students must learn to treat others with the same set of values with which they wish to be treated. RBK School trains students to develop their character through books, moral stories, essays and plays. The students are able to imbibe this as they are filled with moral virtues such as wisdom, courage and justice. A child gets to know and can easily decide as to what is right and what is wrong for him and understands responsibilities. Regular counselling sessions at school and moral education classes help in this regard. Parents should discuss the importance of values and make them do household activities, share their toys with their siblings, teach them to respect their grandparents and many other gestures that help in inculcating important values like patience and sharing among them.

Participation in school activities like organizing events and doing group projects result in students acquiring values like adjustment and tolerance.

Students of Grade 5 were assigned an activity based on the topic ‘How Do My Values Relate to the Values of Others?’ Wherein the students had to find any five values hidden in the grid using a highlighter and explain the importance of any one value in their life in the Seesaw app. Students enjoyed finding the values in the grid and stated its importance in a voice recording.

POVERTY IS A CURSE AND POOR PEOPLE FEEL CURSED FOR LIFE. IT IS NOT NECESSARY THAT PEOPLE LIVE LIKE THIS FOREVER.

THERE ARE WAYS TO COME OUT OF THE SUFFERING AND BUILD A PROSPEROUS FUTURE. EDUCATION IS ONE SUCH ASPECT THAT IS INSTRUMENTAL IN BRINGING US CLOSER TO POSPERITY AND SUCCESS.

"Journey of a poor girl"

Once upon a time, there lived a girl with her parents. Her name was Priya. Her parents loved her as she was their only daughter. Her father was her best friend and pampered her a lot. She was having a comfortable and easy going life until her father suddenly got a severe heart stroke and he passed away. Priya and her mother were totally devastated and clueless after this incident. Her mother now had to start earning to take care of Priya’s Education and other Home expenses as she was left with no savings because of Priya’s father’s Medical Expenses.

One day Priya was looking at her mother work and she felt sorry for her, then she decided that she will not let her mother suffer like this and work day and night to fulfil her dreams. Priya wanted her mom’s life to be comfortable like before. From that day she put all her efforts to become capable in her life. She studied hard and passed out from school and college as a topper.

When she completed her graduation she was interested in management and business and her dream was to start her own company one day. She told her mom that she wants to go to Mumbai for a job. Her mom was happy that her daughter is so ambitious. She applied for a job in the top companies. After looking at her grades and qualifications one company’s CEO was very impressed.

He called Priya for an interview. She was very happy and determined to work in such a successful and growing company. She went there and gave the interview with full confidence. The CEO was impressed by her knowledge and confidence. He offered her the post of a Senior Manager and her salary was 1 lakh a month. She was so happy that she quickly shared this news with her mom and asked her to come over and stay with her in the apartment given to her by her company. She was as happy as a clam because her dream of giving her mother all the luxuries back after her father died, was now looking achievable.

Narrative Essay - No Poverty

THE WHITE TIGER

“Poverty is the worst form of violence”, this quote was said by Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our nation, who himself had suffered from poverty. Recently, I saw a movie,‘The White Tiger’ with my whole family. The title symbolizes strength, courage, willpower, vision and fierceness. All these qualities are required for anyone who wants to rise above poverty. The plot of the movie is that a man from a very poor village in some interior part of India, living in extreme poverty becomes the driver of a renowned, rich family and then uses his wit and cunning to escape from poverty and rise to the top as an entrepreneur. This movie was inspired by the lives of many people living in poverty who dream of rising above that social class but are unable to do so because they do not have enough courage.

Personally, I think the most appropriate cause for poverty is lack of education. There are many people including watchmen, servants, maids, garbage pickers, etc who live in extreme poverty and are unable to educate their children. Everyone should try and educate as many people as possible in as many ways possible so that our country will be Poverty - Free.

Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Peace is the lack of conflict and the absence of violence between heterogeneous social groups. Justice refers to two things: the notion of giving to everybody what they have the right to; and the organization of human beings to ensure that: judges, lawyers, ministries of justice and tribunals. Students develop an aptitude by participating in delivering speech that shows positively in a society and show tolerance towards gender, institutions and worldviews. They learn to take personal responsibility for their emotions, accepting and validating the emotions and perceptions of others.

Yashsvi Sharma - 8I

As a part of the Global Schools Program Yashsvi Harish Sharma of Grade 8-I presents her thoughts about Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions (Sustainable Development Goal)

Hello everyone, this is a wonderful opportunity for me to speak about the most complex topic- Justice. The first act that comes to my mind about getting justice is inequality. Inequality of anything, be it race, gender, caste or religion but gender inequality hurts me a lot because according to me no human being should be discriminated against. Therefore, I choose the topic of feminism. Feminism can be defined as a feeling for equality in gender. I think feminism must evolve because everyone on the planet is entitled to everything and women are still human beings who are soft target in many ways. It hurts me the worst to see people making gender discrimination. In short, feminism is for those women who are deprived of their every right in some form or the other.

Girls and boys were taught the rules made for them by the society from childhood which causes big problem. Every girl is entitled to do what a boy is asked to do and the same goes with boys. So I want to put forward my idea as one thing that everyone should have freedom of everything, for women it might be going alone at night or choosing her career over everything because even wearing shorts doesn't make her look that she is uncultured or too modern. Crying does not make her weak, fighting for herself don't make her selfish, not cooking or not doing housework, don't make her a bad girl as we say "a perfect roti won't define you but a perfect career will." Even boys should not be told that be a man or don't cry like a girl or act like girls, it's their choice because everyone has one. I never felt it but I saw it around so I need a change, I really want to make an impact because everyone deserves freedom of expression. I support feminism and wish you to will do. Let’s create a history together...

Thank you.

Faith can move mountains. where there is hope, there is faith and faith can make miracles happen. A baby tossed in the air laughs, because it has faith that the person who tossing is it, will catch it. Hope does not pretend that troubles do not exist, but it asserts that it would not last forever, because hope does not make things easy but the power of it can make things possible. A bird sitting on a branch is never afraid of the branch breaking because she has faith in her wings. Our greatest weakness lies in giving up, but we never know what tomorrow may bring. Every small thing just starts with a little hope within us. When you give up, you are giving up on things which you had once believed. Just because your prayers are not answered doesn't mean you aren’t heard. The brightest sunshine after the heaviest storms brings hope. Every day is the new day that you haven’t seen before. Take a deep breath, smile and start again.

'Why do we fall prey to the fake news?!’

Fake news is a neologism often used to refer to fabricated news. This type of news can be found in traditional news, social media or fake news websites, has no basis in fact, but is presented as factually accurate. Fake news or junk news or pseudo-news is a type of yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate disinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media. The false information is often caused by reporters paying sources for stories, an unethical practice called checkbook journalism.

The relevance of fake news has increased in post-truth politics. For media outlets, the ability to attract viewers to their websites, is necessary to generate online advertising revenue. Publishing a story with false content that attracts user’s benefits advertisers and improves ratings. Easy access to online advertisement revenue, increased political polarization, and the popularity of social media, primarily the Facebook News Feed, have all been implicated in the spread of fake news, which competes with legitimate news stories.

  • Purpose of propagating fake news

Fake news is written and published usually with the intent to mislead in order to damage an agency, entity, or person, and/or gain financially or politically, often using sensationalist, dishonest, or outright fabricated headlines to increase readership. Similarly, click-bait stories and headlines earn advertising revenue from this activity.

The intent or purpose of fake news is important. In some cases, what appears to be fake news may be news satire, which uses exaggeration and introduces non-factual elements that are intended to amuse or make a point, rather than to deceive.

  • Fake news spreads faster than the significant news stories

Fake news undermines serious media coverage and makes it more difficult for journalists to cover significant news stories. An analysis by BuzzFeed found that the top 20 fake news stories about the 2016 U.S. presidential election received more engagement on Facebook than the top 20 election stories from 19 major media outlets.

Sometimes the media presents twisted or distorted news that may contain an element of truth but also an element of untruth which should be avoided because a half-truth can be more dangerous than a total lie.

Creativity in times of crisis

Grade XII Science student Ms. Meryl Roberts gave tribute to corona warriors with her creative powers.

What are classical drama and modern drama?

Classical drama relied upon the audience's imagination to convey the setting and atmosphere of the play. This was because props were limited.

These flourished around the 16th century. The setting was in Europe.

The central theme of this era was experimentation on human affairs. Greed, marriage, obsessed love for gold or treasure were common ideas.

"All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances."

A notable playwright of this era would be William Shakespeare. He wrote masterpieces much ahead of his time, such as Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, The Tempest.

The drama had suffered a steep decline during the Victorian age. It was revived with great force at the start of the 20th century. Many new trends and currents have occurred within the 20th-century drama.

Ms. ASMI MAYEKAR

XII ARTS

Plays written in the 19th and 20th centuries are modern dramas. The stage is used by dramatists to give expression to certain ideas which they want to spread in society. The dramatists of the 20th century were curious about naturalism and they had endeavoured to affect real problems of life.

They addressed the issues of marriage, justice, law, administration, and strife between capital and labor. They used theatre as a way of bringing about reforms within the conditions of society prevailing in their days.

Famous and critically appreciated plays from that time would be A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, Candida George Bernard shaw, and Arthur Miller’s Death of a salesman.

Word Overpopulation Day

One of the biggest threats to our planet is overpopulation and this has become a rising concern over the years. It is a global crisis that we are facing and it is important that people should become more aware of it as soon as possible. The problem is that it is increasing at a very fast rate and this causes concern for everyone. Overpopulation is causing economic, social, and environmental issues. The problem just doesn’t lie in people having more children but with the low mortality rate which is because of the advancement in health care. World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11 every year to raise awareness on various population issues. On this occasion Grade XI Sociology student’s Ms. Revathi Awasthi and Mst. Amaanullah Nagani gave presentation on this issue and created awareness amongst the other students.

Malala Yousafzai

Tehrik -i- Taliban Pakistan is a far-right Islamist Pashtun based terrorist armed group based along the Afghan Pakistan border. In late 2008 its militants led by Maulana Fazlullan were taking over the Swat valley banning television, music, girls' education and women from going shopping. The seven-grade student Malala Yousafzai and only or the alternative block under the by lime 'gul makai' was published.

Malala wrote various blogs about Taliban and its military launch in Swat. She wrote about its victims how they had destroyed dozens of schools and restricted women's liberty. On 3rd January 2009 as first entry was posted to BBC Urdu block after BBC diary ended, she and her father approached by New York times to film a documentary. Her popularity resulted in receiving death threats. However, Malala and her father continued their activism. As Malala became more recognised, the dangers facing her increased. Death threats against her were published in newspapers and slipped under her door. On 9 October 2012, a Taliban gunman shot Yousafzai as she was riding back home on a bus after taking an exam in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. Yousafzai was 15 years old at the time. According to reports, a masked gunman shouted: “Which one of you is Malala? Speak up, otherwise I will shoot you all.” Upon being identified, Yousafzai was shot with one bullet, which travelled 18 inches (46 cm) from the side of her left eye, through her neck and landed in her shoulder. Two other girls were also wounded in the shooting: Kainat Riaz and Shazia Ramzan, both were stable enough following the shooting to speak to the reporters and provide details of the attack.

After this brutal incident Malala was given immediate medical help. She was moved to Birmingham, England, where she was treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Pakistani government had paid all the expenses such as transport, migration, medical, accommodation and subsistence costs. And fortunately, she was saved.

Malala day was declared by United Nations (on July 12th) as to celebrate the day of every woman, every boy and every girl who have raised their voice for their rights.

On 10 October 2014, Yousafzai was announced as the co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for her struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of children to education. Having received the prize at the age of 17, Yousafzai is the youngest Nobel laureate.

Malala Yousafzai had written many books like I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban, co-written with British journalist Christina Lamb, was published in October 2013 by Little, Brown and Company in the US and by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in the UK. Malala’s Magic Pencil another book written by her and illustrated by Kerascoët . And lastly, We Are Displaced: True Stories of Refugee Lives. All of these were widely praised. These books describe the importance of education, raising voice for our rights and feminism.
