Learning Life Skills
Life skills provide children with important tools for development, such as independent thinking, how to socialize and make new friends, etc. Building life skills is essentially an exercise in helping children develop sound judgment and good habits for long-term stability, wellness, and success. Life skills, as we know, equip kids to manage the day to day challenges of life optimistically.
But we live in a gadget-centric life, where there’s less time, more machines and tons of options to distract kids. The children today are too busy living the amusing virtual world. That is why it is utmost important that we take additional efforts to ensure our little ones learn behavioural skills in their early childhood. Life skills are precious lessons which our kids can use throughout their lifetime.
Parents can take an active role in teaching life skills at home with projects that provide real world examples and lessons in decision making and problem solving. They can be as simple as assigning household chores, helping mom in cleaning the room and in gardening, place their order at a restaurant, money management, chocolate versus vanilla ice cream, blue socks or white socks, playing trains or playing cars, fold and put away their laundry, applying butter and placing vegetable slices on their sandwich bread, the options are endless. Fun and simple activities also encourage working in teams, can help to build social and interpersonal skills.
As hard as it may be, we need to stop over-helping them and give them the space and encouragement to do things on their own.
