Apple Time Flies 2020

Over the span of a year, Apple holds four events. There's usually one in spring, in March followed by the “Worldwide Developers Conference” in June, the famous September event that targets the launch of the latest iPhone and Apple Watch and finally, if there are Macs or a launch of an iPad anticipated, this is done in fall in the month of October. So as always, whilst most people awaited the arrival of new apple products, possibly on the 31st of March, the ongoing global health crisis delayed Apple's plans and there was no spring event. And so, via a press release they introduced the new MacBook Air and iPad Pro in the month of March and debuted the 2020 iPhone SE the following month. Adding on, the Worldwide Developers Conference event was organised online and unveiled iOS 14, iPadOs 14, macOS Big Sur, tvOS 14, and watchOS7.

The start of September buzzed in the Apple time Flies 2020 and the word spread like wildfire. As the date got closer, the excitement grew and as always the final event did not let down. To kick start the event- the Apple Watch series 6 was introduced. This was undoubtedly the star of the show. Although the design does not make any changes, it does add a new headline feature along with a blood oxygen saturation monitoring. This just joins the suite of health metrics that the watch already tends to offer. Along with a new altimeter, which makes it great for fitness apps, the new processor boosts power of the device too. A new addition to the line-up is the Apple Watch SE, a reworked version of the Apple Watch 5. While it stands nowhere in comparison to the Apple Watch 6, it's a more affordable alternative. In hope of expanding fitness options, the launch of the new service - Fitness+ is a subscription that is based around the Apple Watch and gives the user the freedom of finding the perfect workout, tailored to each individual's requirements. And, to keep the Apple services under one package, Apple One is a new way of bundling each service ranging from Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Arcade along with an additional 50 GB of iCloud Storage for $14.95 a month or an alternative package with additional services at a greater price, a considerably smart move and investment.

To keep the momentum going, the introduction of the new iPad Air ended up being the real highlight of the event. Whilst it borrows its design from the iPad Pro, it has got a new A14 Bionic processor and has a 10.09 inch display along with the infamous TouchID button on the right side. Along with that, the entry level iPad gets updated to a A12 Bionid processor, making it much more powerful than the previous version. Finally, the real crowd pleaser was the availability of the already announced iOS 14.

All in all, Apple was undoubtedly able to keep up to their standards despite the current situation. Their dedication towards bettering their products and pleasing their customers, is simply gob-smacking. And, I look forward to seeing the next and final event of this year.

My Career Aspiration – Theoretical Physicist

Physics has been an integral part of life for a very long time which is why it is my dream to, one day, become an accomplished theoretical physicist. Ever since 8th grade I have read, researched and been fascinated with advanced physics concepts which then made me decide to pursue a career in physics. I have been inspired by multiple Indian scientists and mathematicians such as Nobel Prize laureate C.V Raman, Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, Homi Bhabha, etc. I specifically aim to go into research after completing my undergraduate, graduate and finally a PhD in theoretical physics. Theoretical physics is a complex field with multiple branches such as particle physics, theoretical astrophysics and many more. I am still contemplating my decision to pursue research or go into industry however in the end I aspire to be a theoretical physicist.

The progress of the CAS club - Let’s Mend It

The CAS Club “Let’s mend it” is a club which aims at creating products out of waste that can be recycled or trying to mend old objects at home and make them useful again. There are about 12 students that are there in the club. There are 2 club heads; Praney Agarwal and myself (Soumya Saboo) of DP 1. The club supervisors are Rashna Ma’am and Bindu Ma’am. Each week we have a meeting with the students in the CAS period on day 2 in the session we discuss different Ideas or topics that the students are interested in. the students also show us their weekly homework which is to make a product best out of waste or mend and object that is there at their house. After that even the supervisors help us suggest some things that the students can make at home. The club members have been very enthusiastic and I would also encourage more students to come and join the club.

Virtual Internships

Due to the ongoing pandemic, it is very evident that we have to live with this ‘new normal’. Gone are those days where we were discouraged from using gadgets. It is ironical, but now we are on gadgets 4-7 hours daily. We have to eventually get used to this. And think about the possibilities of the vaccines coming soon.

There are so many things we are missing out because of this pandemic. The most important is which university our future will take us to. In order to get to the best University, we need to have a perfect resume. Knowing that to make your resume the best, you do not only have to focus on academics. You should also focus deeply on the non-academic segment as well. Yes, there are plenty of things that make your resume appealing such as internships that you do with different companies. But looking at the current scenario it hard to say, who would give you an opportunity to work under them. Although some companies may be willing to offer this opportunities, they would prioritize their existing employees over you. If they were actually happy to take everyone on the job, then right now, millions would not have lost their jobs.

Now we need to digitalize this as well. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started multiple companies have started offering Virtual Internships. I participated in a few virtual internships that were conducted by; Microsoft, JP Morgan, Accenture, and Deloitte. However, in my opinion, this not the same as the normal internships. But to an extent the way they assign jobs and also teach you is something you cannot get in the normal internships. You are allowed to watch the jobs or teaching lessons as many times as you want. This type would not be as good as the normal, but eventually this something we have to work on. And I am really glad that we are using technology to such an extent.
