The Balfour Collegiate Physical Education staff believes that all students taking part in physical education and wellness classes will benefit from the curriculum in the following areas:
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9
The primary goals of physical education 9 are active living, skillful movement, and responsible and respectful behaviour in their day to day interactions. Objectives of active living include, health and skill related fitness, and core strength and functional fitness. Objectives of skillful movement include games, tactics, strategies, body management, and sport skills.
Some of the activities and sports included in the Grade 9 course are: aerobics, dance, badminton, basketball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, and track and field. Students will also be individually tested for their fitness levels three times per semester.
HEALTH 9
The Grade 9 Health course is a continuation of the “Health Action” model, utilizing a 12-step guide that emphasizes “lifestyle” approaches to health education. The students are encouraged to use a decision making model to make healthy choices in their daily lives.
Units of study will come from the following possibilities: decision making process; dating/relationships; chronic illness; HIV/AIDS; tobacco industry; gambling; tragic death/suicide; sexual health; reducing common illness; safety at home/school/community, and promotion of a healthy school food policy.
WELLNESS 10
Wellness 10 is an activity based class which serves to integrate the physical, spiritual, social, and psychological dimensions of the individual. Each day we work to integrate the strands of physical activity, stress management, leisure, relationships, and healthy eating into our lifestyle. Our major emphasis is on enjoying physical activity and improving health related fitness. Students can be very successful by attending daily and participating with energy and enthusiasm.
Wellness strives to link theory and practice to create a class that enables students to make healthy choices for their whole being.
