In today's session, the party began by enjoying a complimentary meal purchased by the Xanathar's Guild as a gesture of appreciation for their heroism during the brawl. Before they could savour every bite of stuffed garter snake and seed bread, the tavern burst out into a sea of shrieks. A massive, green troll crawled out of the opening in the Yawning Portal, accompanied by nine parasitic stirges. Abandoning etiquette and house rules that prevent the use of weapons and magic in Waterdeep, the party sprang into action. This was no easy battle, as the troll was extremely powerful and the stirges were surprisingly difficult to hit. Eventually, the party was joined by Durnan and two of the Xanathar's Guild members, and together they defeated this ghastly enemy.
Following the chaos and confusion, word quickly spread about the impressive skills and valour demonstrated by the party members. This drew the attention of one patron who introduced himself as "Volothamp Geddarm, chronicler, wizard, and celebrity." In perhaps the most Volo gesture of all time, Volo presented each of the party members with a copy of his book before seeking their assistance in a personal matter. He pleaded with the party to help him locate his friend Floon Blagmar, who has been missing for ten days and was last seen in the Dock Ward at a tavern called the Skewered Dragon. He has paid each party member 10 dragons, and pledges to pay each of them 100 more upon Floon's safe return.
In today's session, the party faced it's first encounter in the city of Waterdeep, and it was... well... a little complicated. While enjoying each other's company at the Yawning Portal tavern, fight broke out over a human patron whose life was in jeopardy. In an attempt to save the life of this man, a tavern brawl broke out between our party, two half orc thugs and a drow. Waterdeep being a very lawful town, the party had to be extremely careful not to draw steel, use lethal force, or cast magic in a public gathering place. Doing so would certainly attract the attention of the City Watch and wuold likely end the campaign before it began. As a result, the party had to resort to using improvised weapons ranging from dishes and mugs to brooms and a dead goose. In the end, the party made short work of the marauders and incapacitated them.
As it happens, the man they rescued was a member of Xanathar's Guild, and the party inadvertently made a powerful ally in the city of Waterdeep.
The party also met their friendly faces at the Yawning Portal:
Today, the party introduced their characters and were introduced to the legendary city of Waterdeep. I am so excited to run an urban campaign with this group of students, and they have chosen such interesting and engaging characters! On this epic journey, we will have a dragonborn sorcerer and cleric, a dwarven wizard and fighter, an elven ranger, a human barbarian, and a tiefling bard! The students have done a much better job for this campaign of really understanding the job of the players in an RPG, and their characters and their abilities are very well-researched.
This site will not be used for copyrighted details, but will be a place to share highlights and hilarity from our group.
I am experimenting with a lot of new things this time around, as this will be my second campaign as a DM, and I have learned a lot. Below are my party's initiative tags that I designed in Google Slides.
I would also like to thank the amazing people at Ice Cream Dice / Forging Heroes Society and Tabletop Loot for their generous donations! I really appreciate this, as running a middle school party can be quite expensive. With the help of these awesome companies, I am able to share the wonders of the Forgotten Realms with a devoted group of incredible students!
