Activity - Retell the story with a Diorama
You are halfway through the book now! For the next two weeks, your activity is to create a diorama with a buddy retelling your favourite part of the book so far.
You will need:
Shoebox or any small cardboard box with a lid
Construction paper or coloured cardstock
Scissors
Glue or double-sided tape
Markers or coloured pencils
Small toys or figurines (optional)
Craft supplies like small rocks, fake grass, or craft foam (optional)
Step-by-step instructions:
Choose a Scene: Decide on a scene for your diorama. It could be Danny and his dad flying a kite, Danny driving the Baby Austin or his dad in the pit. What was your favourite part of the book?
Plan your scene: Do a quick drawing of your scene in your reading book.
Prepare the box: If using a shoebox, remove the lid and cut out one or two sides to create an open front. This will serve as the viewing window for the diorama.
Create the background: Use construction paper or coloured cardstock to create the backdrop of the diorama. Cut it to fit the back and sides of the box and glue or tape it in place. For example, if the scene is Danny flying a kite, you can use green construction paper for the hill and grass and blue for the sky.
Add elements: Create various elements to place inside the diorama. You will need to create figures for any characters in the scene, outside elements such as cars or trees, or inside elements like furniture.
Arrange the scene: Arrange the elements inside the box to create your desired scene. Experiment with different placements until they are satisfied with how it looks.
Decorate and add details: Use markers or coloured pencils to add more details and enhance the scene. You can draw flowers, animals, or any other elements that fit their theme. Optional: If available, use craft supplies like small rocks, fake grass, or craft foam to add texture and depth to the diorama.
Secure the elements: Once everything is in place, use glue or double-sided tape to secure the elements inside the diorama. Make sure everything is well attached so that it doesn't fall apart easily.
Finishing touches: Allow the glue to dry completely, and then check the diorama for any loose parts or areas that need reinforcement.
Display and share: Once the diorama is complete and dry, proudly display their creation for everyone to see. Take a photo and share it on your blog.
This activity is for Chapters 10 - 11 and 12 - 13.
