Waka Inquiry Units

Waka still play a prominent role in Aotearoa New Zealand today. But why are waka so important to us?

From whakataukī to pepeha to waka ama competitions: Waka play an important role in our lives in Aotearoa New Zealand. This site contains inquiry units which can be used individually or combined into one longer inquiry unit.

Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore the historic and cultural importance of waka for tangata whenua

  • Gain a better understanding of the technology involved in designing and building different kinds of waka

  • Investigate different forms of navigation used at different times in our country’s history

  • Examine the causes and the consequences of migration for their own family and for Aotearoa New Zealand

Students will also have the opportunity to apply their Digital Technology learning to respond to tasks and to share their learning.
