It's a commonly misspelled word - but that's not surprising........
If GH stands for P as in Hiccough
If OUGH stands for O as in Dough
If PTH stands for T as in Pthisis
If EIGH stands for A as in Neighbour
If TTE stands for T as in Gazette
If EAU stands for O as in Plateau
Then the right way to spell POTATO should be…. GHOUGHPTHEIGHTTEEAU
(Just a bit of fun but - you get the point.....the English language is complicated!)
Although many children aren’t likely to spell potato this way, they might just add an ‘e’ on the end.
They wouldn’t be alone either as there was a cringe worthy moment when a prominent adult got muddled too.
In 1992, Vice President Dan Quayle was visiting Rivera Elementary School in Trenton, New Jersey, and jumped in to help facilitate a spelling bee. It all went very wrong.
So is there a way to remember how to spell this word?
Potato has an 'o' at the end which we can remember because the O looks like a potato!
And the plural is POTATOES
