Achieving Excellence One Student at a Time

A Message From Our Principal

The month of March brought us so many amazing student performances. From the AWESOME musical to the STEM showcase, I was completely blown away by how well our talented students performed. We should all be so proud of the hard work and dedication our students have shown. It is a testament to the great learning community of Smith we are all a part of. Events like these remind me of how much we can learn from our kids and a TED talk by Adora Svitak.

As we head into spring break a couple of reminders:

  • Marking Period 3 ends Friday, April 1st

  • Report cards, along with progress toward goals and objectives, will be viewable on the parent portal on Friday, April 8th

Lastly, as the weather gets warmer and more students to choose to walk or ride bicycles to school, we ask that you kindly adhere to the safety protocols during pick-up and drop-off in the parking lot. Please do not block the bus lanes, and follow the appropriate traffic pattern around Smith. Please remind your children about safety at the railroad crossings in town should they be walking this spring.

I wish you and your family a relaxing and enjoyable Spring Break. Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to a productive fourth marking period of school!

Mrs. Christine Davis

Supervisor of K-8 Education and Student Welfare

Helping Your Middle Schooler Learn to Love Reading

Numerous studies show that reading for pleasure has many benefits. It is linked to clearer thinking, better decision-making and problem-solving skills, and even stress reduction. In addition, it expands the imagination, improves concentration and vocabulary, and teaches the reader about the world around them.

By the time students get to middle school, reading for pleasure drops off dramatically. Additionally, many students spend a considerable amount of time in the digital world, mostly on social media or gaming. So, how do you get middle school students to put down their devices and pick up a book? Here are some ideas to foster your child’s love of reading:

  • Allow your child to choose what they read, and provide access to books about things that interest them.

  • Keep books in the house. Kids who have access to lots of books read more. If your family has an e-reader, keep it stocked with new books.

  • Set a good example by reading yourself. Parents who read more have kids who read more.

  • Creating a mini "book club" with your kids by reading the same book is another excellent way to share your love of reading, as well as providing a great opportunity to foster conversation with your child.

6th Grade April Highlight: 6th Grade is Going to Philly!

After a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19, the 6th grade is making their way back to Philadelphia! On April 28th, 6th grade students will tour the important historic sites of Old City as they connect the real world sites to the content covered in social studies about the American Revolution.

Students will see Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed and adopted, while also viewing the famous Liberty Bell only a few short steps away.

Students will tour the Betsy Ross House to view a real-life 18th century dwelling while learning more about the woman who supposedly “sewed” the first American flag. Did she do it? We will have to find out!

Students will stroll down Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited street in the United States with houses dating back to 1703.

Finally, we will meet at the National Constitution Center, an interactive museum devoted to study and scholarship of the Constitution and the Constitutional Convention, complete with Signer’s Hall where the students can see what the actual signers of The Constitution looked like.

We may even have time for a sweet ice cream treat at the Bourse! It is going to be an exciting day, and our 6th graders are looking forward to it!

Staff Spotlight- Stephanie Ormaeche

Hi Ramland! My name is Stephanie Ormaeche and I am the family and consumer science teacher here at Smith School. I teach 6th grade Intro to Baking, 7th Grade Foods and Nutrition and 8th Grade Culinary Arts. I am a Ramsey graduate and I am glad to be back in my hometown working with great teachers and even better students.

I studied Baking and Pastry Arts as well as Business Management with a concentration in Italian Cuisines at the Culinary Institute of America. During my last semester of college I decided that what I desired most was teaching in the classroom, instilling confidence in those who aren't so confident within the kitchen. In my classroom, students learn a variety of skills including how to read a recipe, how to collaborate with peers in their kitchen groups and how to execute a well baked product or a savory dish.

I like to spend my free time with my family and our dog Harley. In the summer I try to travel often to other countries, eat the foods of a variety of places and cultures as well as learn new techniques to bring back to my own kitchen or classroom.

Author Visit, 2022

On Monday, March 28th, award-winning author, Jerry Craft, visited Smith School!

Jerry Craft is the best-selling and award-winning author of New Kid and Class Act. He holds the esteem of having the first graphic novel to ever win the John Newberry Medal.

Each grade level attended an assembly where Jerry Craft spoke about his experiences as a young person with reading & how he struggled to find books he connected with, and how that led to him becoming an award-winning author.

Jerry Craft imparted plenty of wisdom and inspiration to students about the confidence they must have in themselves in order to succeed, saying to students “Some people look for reasons why they can’t do something, I look for reasons why I can.”

In addition, Jerry Craft gave drawing demonstrations so students could get a first-hand look at his artwork, and he fielded questions from our students.

The visit culminated in a lunch with a group of 20 students where Jerry answered more questions, did another perspective drawing demonstration, and gave additional insights on his journey as an author and future books.

A huge thank you to our PTO for their help in making this year's author visit possible!

"Laissez le bon temps rouler!" Madame Treger's French classes learned all about Mardi Gras and its cultural traditions.

They worked in groups on a reader's theater workshop and performed skits. They made themed floats out of shoeboxes for their class parade and voted on creativity and theme. (Shrek was the overall winner!)

On March 30th, Smith hosted its first-ever "D.E.A.R Event"- Drop Everything And READ! Seasonal Allergies

As we approach the spring season we’re kindly asking that if any of your children have seasonal spring allergies and they require any medications to be given in school for the symptoms, please complete the following medication authorization form, https://www.ramsey.k12.nj.us/cms/lib/NJ02000378/Centricity/Domain/336/Medication_Authorization_Form_2017.pdf

Some of you have provided this information already, but often, as spring rolls around, this doesn’t become an issue until the child is symptomatic.

Please note that nebulizers cannot be administered in school but inhalers can be used.

We do not want to have to exclude children from school because they are suffering from allergy symptoms.

It will be helpful to have children take necessary medication at home prior to arriving at school so their symptoms are controlled.

COVID exposures for children over age 12 & booster shots

Exposed close contacts who have no COVID-19 compatible symptoms in the following groups should be excluded from school:

• Age 12 or older who completed the primary series of a recommended COVID-19 vaccine but have not received a recommended booster shot when eligible.

• Persons who are not fully vaccinated.

Exposed close contacts who have no COVID-19 symptoms in the following groups do not need to be excluded from school:

• Age 12 or older and have received all recommended vaccine doses, including boosters and additional primary shots for some immunocompromised people.

• Age 5-11 years and completed the primary series of COVID-19 vaccines.

• Had confirmed COVID-19 within the last 90 days (tested positive using a viral test).

**Reminder Parents/Guardians: Report your child's confirmed or suspected COVID case to the Smith School's health office (201-785-2314) to allow for reporting to local health officials and to perform contact tracing procedures.**
