Grading

Throughout your studies of Spanish you will hear the word "proficiency" quite a bit. This is because the most important measure of your success in a language is your ability to use it. In this course you will NOT take traditional "quizzes" or "tests". The grade you receive in the course will be based on your proficiency on different writing, speaking and reading/listening tasks in each unit. Any rubrics used will be "proficiency" based rubrics. The expectation is that you will progress along the Novice level in 8th grade as you will be able to use and understand Spanish with more and more detail and on various different topics. You will only be expected to perform at the proficiency level appropriate to where you should be on the "path", but grades will range based on whether your are performing below, at, or beyond those expectations. Everyone will progress at his or her own pace, but it is expected that each individual will make efforts to continually learn and grow. Your grade is mostly dependent upon the effort you make each day in class!

Your grade breakdown will be as follows:

Integrated Performance Assessment - 40%

At the end of each unit you will have an assessment related to the theme studied. This assessment will determine how how you use the language and concepts presented. This multi-part assessment will contain an interpersonal (speaking or writing), a presentational (speaking or writing), and an interpretive (reading or listening) portion.

Evidence of Learning - 60%

There will be many formal and informal assessments throughout each unit of study. Some of them will be completed in class and others will done at home. They will require you to use all 3 modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal and presentational, as well as to demonstrate your mastery of the units' goals.
