About Me

After spending 13 years as a student in the Ramsey Public Schools, I earned my Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Mathematics and Mathematics Education from Rutgers University in New Brunswick. I have been teaching at Ramsey High School since 1999, primarily as a math and computer science teacher, but I have also taught physics here at RHS.

I currently coach golf and cross-country at the varsity level, and coached basketball in my earlier years in Ramsey. I feel that being involved in extracurricular activities, including, but not limited to, athletics, builds character and develops skills, mindsets, habits, and memories that last a lifetime!

In my spare time, I love to spend time outdoors running, traveling, and cooking a great meal for my wife and family.

How to Succeed in Math

In general

  1. You learn more from your mistakes than your successes

  2. Keep in mind that mathematics helps develop your problem-solving skills, which applies to every field - math makes you smarter!

  3. Bone-up on your basic skills - calculators are helpful, but there is no substitute for doing basic calculations in your head

  4. Develop a good relationship with your all your teachers - be positive

  5. Look for math in your everyday life

In class

  1. Get engaged in class - listen, write, participate, aim to understand

  2. Volunteer to answer questions - don't be afraid to be wrong

  3. Try to avoid missing class (or even leaving the classroom for a few minutes), but when you do, get caught up quickly

  4. Ask questions early, and listen to the answers to questions your classmates have asked

  5. Be supportive of your classmates

After class

  1. Do your homework FOR REAL - use your class notes as a guide

  2. Find a study partner or form a study group

  3. Study by DOING problems, not just reading over

  4. Use online search tools to answer your own questions when not in class

  5. Understand the process and keep memorization to a minimum - through practice and experience comes mastery
