Social-Emotional Learning & Character Education

What is social emotional learning and character education?

Social-emotional learning and character education are not a single program or teaching method. They involves coordinated strategies and resources that are shared across classrooms, homes and the community. To that end the district is raising awareness for students, parents, staff and the community through various venues, such as:

  • staff and student training via district child study team and guidance staff regarding mental health signs, symptoms and resources,
  • parent academies throughout the school year with a focus on mental health and wellness,
  • supporting teachers to help integrate social-emotional learning into the curriculum and making the connection between social-emotional learning and academic outcomes, and;
  • creating and sustaining learning environments that are characterized by trust and respectful relationships.
  • focus on timeless character education topics such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship
  • a district-wide focus on kindness
