Achieving Excellence One Student at a Time

Together

#RamseyStrong

We continue to find our way through these unusual times, Smith teachers and staff are here to promote student learning from their homes. I am so proud of the students and staff for the way they have embraced remote learning. Students are staying connected online, sharing their learning with their peers and navigating digital technology like superstars! Our teachers and support staff are trailblazing new teaching strategies and changing-up their teaching experience to meet this new model. I am also so proud of you, our parents. You shifted to being your child’s major facilitator of learning. You are accommodating, encouraging, and present. I am truly grateful to be the principal of such a resilient and evolving community.

Take the Pledge: Eliminate Stigma

Stigma is when someone, or even you yourself, negatively views a person just because they have an illness (NAMI, 2020). Those who are stigmatized describe feelings of shame and embarrassment, or judgment from someone else. Living with mental illness should not be something that someone is ashamed of or embarrassed about. We need to think of wellness as not only physical well- being, but emotional well-being too. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean that someone isn’t struggling. The town of Ramsey is pledging to be stigma-free, and we, as a school community, need to be stigma-free too.

In an effort to acknowledge our Stigma-Free initiative during remote learning, students at Smith Middle School will be shown a video and PowerPoint explaining what stigma is, and how they can positively impact the perception and attitudes surrounding mental illness. We want to highlight the role that empathy plays in trying to understand someone’s experiences and how we can support others. There will be information on activities that students can engage in that promote psychological and emotional health.

Navigating life with a mental health condition can be challenging. The isolation, blame, and secrecy that is often reinforced by stigma can create barriers to reaching out and getting much-needed support from family, friends, or professionals. Eliminating stigma and addressing mental health conditions is important for all of us. Mental illness is treatable, but many people do not seek services due to the fear of how others will respond. The following resources are provided for information and services if you or someone you know needs help
