Monthly Happenings

June

In 5W math, we will continue classifying triangles and quadrilaterals based on their properties and on using patterns to describe how the perimeters and areas of rectangles change when the dimensions of the rectangle change. Our last unit Temperature, Height and Growth focuses on using coordinate graphs, ordered pairs, tables and symbolic notation to model real world and mathematical situations. Students will analyze arithmetic patterns in the tables and the shape of the graphs to describe and compare these situations. Context includes temperature and height changes over time and growing geometric shapes. Students will work with both the situations that follow patterns, allowing predictions of future values and situations based on data. The IXL assignment each week will be assigned on Mondays and due the morning of the following Monday. Students will be required to complete thirty minutes of IXL for the week.

In 5W science, students will continue to learn that all living things have basic needs that must be met for survival: nutrients (food), water, air, adequate shelter or space, and acceptable climate (temperature of surroundings). Organisms are interdependent for the energy they need through food chains and food webs. Plants (producers) manufacture their own food using energy from the sun, water, carbon dioxide, and nutrients from soil. Animals (consumers) depend on plants and other animals as a food source. Some animals eat only plants (herbivores), some eat only other animals (carnivores), and some eat both plants and animals (omnivores). Some take their nutrients from dead organisms (decomposers) and then return these nutrients to the soil for plants to use in their food production. The purpose of this section of our unit is for students to understand the essential connection between plants and animals for energy, and for survival. We will also conduct a dissection and study of owl pellets. Please sit with your student and have them log into Schoology to show you their assignments and my comments.

As always, I wish you a good month and a fun, safe summer. To all our wonderful fathers, have a wonderful Father’s Day. This is my last Monthly Happening correspondence to all of you. It has been an honor and privilege to be your child’s teacher. Thank you for sharing them with me. It has also been a pleasure getting to know all of you and I thank you for all of your support this year. I will miss the kids dearly and I wish them much success in middle school and beyond. Thank you all for a wonderful year.
